Dead Macintosh IIfx

I had bought some new equipment for my IIfx for connecting it to internet. I hadn't used it for about two years and it worked perfectly then, and now it won't start :( No boot sound or no fan spinning up. I have removed floppy and harddrive and all pci cards, and still nothing. I even bought stuff to clean it with since it was dirty one place, but nothing. Does IIfx require working batteries to work? There are two batteries and only one of them work, tested with my voltmeter.

Any advice?

The dead battery needs replace or the unit will not turn on, nothing to worry about (except you said you removed PCI cards from a Nubus machine).

Hehe :) I know it's Nubus :) I'm not used to write Nubus, hehe :)

So you won't worry? A IIfx won't boot without good batteries?

No it will not, one of the batteries is used to turn the machine on and that is the one that dies first. I have a pair of IIfx and a pair of IIx machines so I know.

Make sure you put the battery in correctly (+ and -) is marked because it will not work unless the batteries are good and in the correct polarity. One of my IIfx was sold to me cheap because the owner replaced both batteries and put one in backwards and it didnt start so he thaught it was dead.

What does the other battery do? Couldn't I just switch the working battery with the not working one? Just to check if the machine still works...

BTW, I live in Norway. They never have special stuff, then you have to go online. Doubt I'll find batteries in a local store, just clothing and other chick stores here.

Most old world power sensing mac's(keyboard power on button) will not boot without a good CMOS battery. I too have a IIFX and have had it not boot after a while in storage, took the old batteries out, popped in new ones, and back to life it came. I love hearing that 40 mb 5-1/2" spin up. It is such a soothing sound. :I

Hehe :) Yes it works. Got my batteries today and popped them in and it worked :)

The only problem I have now is that my floppydrive seems to be broken :( How can I replace it? What kinda models does it support?

I think I might have broken the floppydrive myself. I was gonna remove dust from it after ~20 years without cleaning it. And it was ALOT. But I think I pried the top read/write head :( I have included some pictures.

You won't be able to get that read/write head to come back down again. I know because I accidently did the same to one of my drives. Any Auto-Inject Sony SuperDrive mechanism will fit and should work fine, though these are becoming harder and harder to find. The later Manual Inject models will not fit the IIfx case/bezel.

The head was loose to. So I ironed it, and I fastended the spring. And it looked good and "closed", but it didn't work :(

So I must buy Sony MP-F75W-01G, Sony MP-F75W-11G or Sony MP-F75W-12G? Or does other models work?

Is it possible to take the top reader from another drive? Say a generic PC floppy drive?

Sony MP-F75W-02G is another one. There are probably other model numbers out there too. AFAIK, the spring in a generic floppy drive is slightly different. And fiddling with such procedures is bound to make things worse, in my opinion.

I found a new one in an old LC on work. I'll trash the old one. I think it was about to be broken anyway, the head was very loose even before I began to clean it. The new one works great :) Much faster to and not as many sounds.

Next time, a good idea is to use software such as TechTool and a cleaning diskette to clean the floppy drive. :)

This is good advice. However, that won't get rid of the dust and old grease. Ideally you need to remove the cover and use a can of compressed air which should blow out all the loose dust and dirt. Then, using cotton swabs, you can clean any bits that are still left. It's also a good idea to oil or grease all the moving parts.

Dunno if this requires a new thread. But I've bought a Dayna E/II-T DaynaPort Nubus card. It says no errors. EtherTalk looks to work. I have Mac OS 6.0.8 with MacTCP. But I can't seem to ping it or it me. I've used the normal Dayna Card installer. I used to have an older Dayna Card without RJ-45 on it, I bought all kinds of stuff to get it to RJ-45 but never got much luck. The new seems as I said to work. The switch light yellow for 10Mbit and the card itself lights green. The wire is double and triplechecked. So nothing wrong with that, also tried other wires.
