Could we add a Linux/Unix forum?

I looked at the Software category and it is all over the place. There are postings on OS 6, 7, X, games and everything else. I think that makes it harder to find posts on the particular software you are interested in. Also, some topics like MIDI, Linux, and others will need to discuss both hardware and software. Just my two cents.

All my 68k Macs run some flavor of Unix. If such a forum existed, the biggest chunk of my posts (other than the random gabbing type) would probably be there. That said, I understand why it was not recreated on the new site.

I vote for resurrection. It was active when it was there. And we're not talking -any- *nix, bluekatt, but specifically 68k *nix. There's not too many places around the webtertubeway you can go for that.

That would be great. I've been looking for advice on how and what *nixes I could use on older Macs, and I suspect it would be a great forum...

Admins! Your assistance is required! :p

That'd be neat to bring back. Not only are most (if not all) of the big 68k *nix sites out there dead/dying, as the Classic Mac OS becomes increasingly outdated (especially in the browser world), more and more people are popping a nice little *nix distro on their older Macs to keep them useful.

I vote with Bunsen. Having that clumped in with "Software" is silly. There really isn't much of a relation between *nix and, say, System 6 Doodling Apps :p

A "maclinux" community (for all Unix on Macs despite the name) was created on LiveJournal not too long ago, but it is very small and mostly dead. A few of us still prowl comp.unix.aux if you were to post there, but again, it's not that many. It's hard to get momentum going. Here we already have momentum with most of the hard-core 68k folks already hanging out here, so it shouldn't be too hard to make a forum work.

I'd like to see a *nix forum on here as well. I find Linux/*BSD to be among the most interesting current generation softwares for the 68k Macintosh. And isn't this forum about 68k Macs and their current uses?

I think it makes sense. Classic Mac OS continues to lose relevance and even early versions of OS X are starting to become dated. The only way to keep older Macs useful in the future is to adopt some other OS that has more widespread support.

Everyone,

Thank you for supporting my suggestion.

As a community we have different interests. Some are interested in programming, others keep 68k macs for the nostalgia, others still see them as tools for education, as gadgets to mod, and toys to have fun with. Some even keep them just because they are cool :) I believe that any interest, as long as it has to do with Apple (there are even forums for newer OS X macs), should be welcome here, and if enough people share that interest, then it should have its own forum.

By having a seperate forum for each interest it will make it much easier to find postings on a subject. Also, by having more specialized forums people with those interests will monitor them and the discussions will be much more lively and engaging.

Debian Linux keeps a surprising number of my machines useful. I'd love to see a forum dedicated to 68k/older PPC Linuxes.

I like Debian, if only for the fact that there are variants of it for virtually every computing platform that is capable of running Linux so there probably aren't many cross compatibility issues if you have a wide variety of architectures in your home.

Precisely! Also, the easy package management makes it perfect for older Macs(no slow compilation, and closer to the ease of install of Mac OS progs.)
