Color classic - Replaced caps -> clicking analog board

HI all,

Because i had some small issue with my color classic's analog board (very little, but fibrating screen) i replaced all the capacitors..

(hell of a job, but, my little mac deserve this of course).

But, after replacing all the caps, the mac doesn't start anymore.

When i turned it on, i hear a few clicks, and then is stops.

When i remove the logicboard, it keeps clicking (nearby the CRT)

I checked the polarity and solderjoints and capacitor values, but i can not find any mistake.

What is the best way to troubleshoot this, without replacing (again) all the caps?

If you haven't already, I would suggest using a continuity tester to check that each cap is working. I'm not an expert at this, but I can testify that multimeters have saved me a number of times. Are these caps all electrolytic, or did you use solid ones for the surface-mounted replacements?

Make sure everything you unplugged is plugged back in, if so then you have a shorted capacitor. Keep in mind also, that if you installed one backwards that will also be a short and in some cases a backwards cap will pop!

The ticking is because the SMPS wont go into regulation. a capacitor that actually isnt soldered down properly, or connected in the circuit can cause this, as well as a shorted capacitor or shorted solder bridge across the capacitor. 

SMPS units require a certain load on its output rails, especially the rail that is used in the feedback network to keep the loop stable. if the load is too low, (meaning an open connection) then the power supply will cycle due to overshoot, so it effectively oscillates.

Also if you short it, (high load) the power supply will still cycle although it will be much louder because of the overcurrent situation created by it. Like a chirp chirp chirp instead of a featherlight tick tick tick. 

Pictures top and bottom of your rework job will determine my position on this matter.

Here are some high res photo's;

I desoldered all the caps, and checks it with my ESR meter. They all give the right value.

There are some (likely) cooked resistors, but when i check them, the give the right value as well..

It is a light chirp chirp chirp (but i can not compare it to another faulty board)

by the way: the little dots on the caps are my marks to mark them as 'GOOD'

One of the traces passing by under the big resistors at RP8 and RP23 looks like it could be burned out on one of the photos.

Those traces and pads around there fell off my analog board just by looking at them. Heat is doing a great job at killing those.

I had to run a few wires around there on my board to fix things up.

Well looking at the first picture which took forever to load (Felt like I was on dial-up again), it appears the solder job is atrocious as if half the vias arnt filled all the way in. or the solder is just globbed on. 

Now, it could be the camera's lightning or angle, its hard to tell. But from that first pic that could very well be a severe problem.

@techknight -> It is the angle. I see what you mean by 'are not filled all the way', but that is the reflection of the new solder joints.

The new solder joints are reflecting much more then the old ones. I will take some new pictures by day-light

Those traces and vias around RP8/RP23 still look do not look good.

Also the trace looks like it could have been lifted below DL21/22 or is there just copper coming through?

Thats normal. the PCB and traces tend to darken with high heat. What you wanna check for is a broken solder joint associated with that, and I dont see any. 

Unfortunately this is going to take some stage by stage electronic troubleshooting from this point forward. I have given all I could give here.

Hi all,

I replaced all the caps again, just to be sure i did not make any mistake.

Still nothing. So the caps can not be the problem (actually, We already knew, because I had remeasured them).

During the re-assembly i noticed that the metal bottom place was bend a bit.

Because i want to save some time i reinstalled it to check after replacing a few resistors i left the metal plate, and guess;

It started!

During a closer look it looks like the metal bottom plate was touching some solderpoints...

Sometimes it is that simple....

Congratulations! I'm glad it wasn't from a dead trace, since I've only found running a wire to be a safe solution in certain cases.

Thats strange, considering my unit the metal cover is insulated. So that was unusual.

I my case it is just a unisolated metal plate.. The little hooks at the end of the plate that will stick into the PSU were bend and where touching some soldering point. It is quite thick metal, but due to taking the board in and out i thing it bend in a unlucky way.

There are still some toasted resistors, but i didn't replace them yet, because the give the right value on my messure tool.

So the work is not done yet, but it is working, so a good point to start!
