At a bargain store, I found a power pc 8100/110 for 6 bucks. Decided to pick it up with a keyboard and mouse that were also there, and i was out for under $10. Seems to be working fine, but I don't have a mac monitor so i can't be sure. Anybody know where i can get a cheap either the db-15 to vga or hdi45 to vga adaptor? Could i potentially make one myslef with the connectors, some cable, and some spare time?

Do you have a PDS video card in the unit? If so you can get a cheap adapter on ebay or LEMswap google groups. If you have to use the built in video then those cost a bunch more and the parts are much harder and expensive to get. Best bet is use a PDS video card and a normal adapter.

Bargain store is right!

Ebay seller macmetex has cheap Mac-VGA adapters and might even have an HDI-45 to DB-15 monitor dongle as well. AFAIK there is no adapter that goes straight from the HDI-45 to VGA - you'll need a Mac-VGA adapter in either case.

Yeah it has the PDS card. Thanks Bunsen for the ebay seller, but i'm going to have to think about that, after shipping and import duties to canada, it'll cost more than the whole mac 8-o . I'm going to look aroung at my local cable stores and such see if they have any. Maybe make a post on craigslist or something, or look for canadian ebay sellers. Last time i bought something from the states, the canadian government charged me 80% duty xx( .

Those Canadian import duties and VAT seem philosophically incompatible with the spirit of NAFTA to me. And I hate how things seem to get stuck in customs for so long. It makes trading in old Macs and parts with our Canadian neighbors not worth the effort because of the low value of most of the goods. That must be really annoying to you Canadians!

Peace,

MC Price Breakers used to sell (maybe they still do), a direct HDI-45 to VGA adapter. I bought one from them several years ago. It was very useful when I was still using my 6100 as a main machine.

Yeah it has the PDS card.
Then you are better off using that, rather than the onboard video, for the simple reason that the HDI adapter is harder to find.

Is it the AV card - with two S-Video ports (round MiniDIN- 8) as well as a monitor port? Or the HPV card, which only has the monitor port? The HPV card is faster.

Kan's 6100 site has loads of useful information - the 6100 is the same architecture as the 8100, just in a smaller case and with no Nubus slots.

BTW ignore the prices on that site - they are w-a-y out of date. Stuff for the 6100 is dirt cheap these days, when you can find it.

I don't like your chances on finding an HDI-45 adapter - the port was only used on three Macs, and that was 15 years ago! The DB-15 Mac to VGA adapter to plug into the PDS card is a much more common part, but even that went out of production years ago when Macs moved to VGA and DVI ports.

Maybe make a post on craigslist or something, or look for canadian ebay sellers.
Worth a shot. Don't forget to try the Trading Post forum here, too.
db-15 to vga / Could i potentially make one myslef?
Yeah, it can be done. Have a search here and through Google and hardwarebook.com

I have not had much problem buying items from the states on ebay. Maybe I am just lucky.

If you would rather deal locally, I would suggest putting up an ad on your local Usedeverywhere.com . At least here in Victoria it is so well used that someone around will have that part you are looking for and would be glad to part with it for $5 or so.

I think I'm going to give this a shot. Gonna try to dig up an old cable, i think i should have some hanging around and see if this works. I guess i'll buy a vga male/female cable, and cut off the male end, either stick the raw wires into the respective pins, or pin them into a d-sub 15 pin if i don't want it to look too redneck. Will report back with updates.
