Can I Dual Boot 6.0.7 and 7.1 (or 7.5.3)?

I have two partitions on my hard drive now. I've copied the files from my boot partition to the 2nd partition. It's running 6.0.7.

Can I now upgrade ONLY the 2nd partition to 7.1 or 7.5.3? Then use System Switcher to boot between the two setups?

I love my system 6.0.7, but have found more than a few items in my floppy collection that are System 7 specific. Not to mention getting it online would be immensely easier under 7.x, right?

Is that the way to go or would it be better to just move to System 7 as my primary operating system overall?

AND, Thanks to you all for all the help!! I've been living on this site, in this forum and a few others, looking up stuff and following links and..... EVERYTHING.

If you have two partitions, they will show up as two volumes in the Startup Disk (Startup Device on System 6) control panel. One of your partitions currently has 6.0.7 on it. Install 7.x on the other partition and switch between them in the control panel. You only need a program like System Picker if you have one volume, but the partition will make Apple's control panel sufficient for this task.

Your choice of primary operating system depends on which programs you want to run. For maximum compatibility, I'd go with 7.x, but if you only need it occasionally, feel free to stick with 6.0.7 most of the time, especially if you prefer its simplicity and speed.

Using Harddisk Toolkit you also might choose the partition to boot from at the beginning of the boot process (cold start / restart). This works not as convenient as with Option-boot on recent machines, but you easily may specify the desired boot partition holding a key combination until the Happy Mac shows up.
