Buying Another AAUI Adapter vs Nubus Ethernet Card with RJ45

Hello all,

When I bought my Centris 650 a few months back, I also bought an AAUI adapter so I could hook it up to the internet as well as transfer files with my OS 9 machines if I needed to do that.  The adpater, which was NIB when I got it, worked fine for a while, but I think there must be a short in the cable that runs from the box to the Mac because the last time I used it I had to bend the adapter's cable and position the box a certain way otherwise I wouldn't get any signal.  So I am now debating whether I should buy another adapter box or buy a Nubus card with an RJ45 port on it?  All three of my Nubus slots are empty and the only other card I considered getting was maybe a graphics card at some point.  On the other hand, another AAUI to RJ45 adapter box would be cheaper and not require any drivers.  Any advice is appreciated.

It might look messy, but have you considered splicing new cable in at the two connector ends and replacing the middle segment?

My recommendation would be to get another AAUI adapter. In my experience, these are fairly reliable, so hopefully you just happened to get a bad one, and you won't have any more go bad in this way.

Basically, for all the reasons you say, which I agree with, and a couple others:

• Cheaper than a NuBus card
  
• Save your slots in case something interesting comes up later
  
• No need to deal with drivers
  

Curious as to what adapter you got? I've had a couple different kinds, and haven't seen problems, but I haven't had all of the different kinds and of course with anything random failures can occur, even with a product sitting in packaging for 30 years.

(Trag is being extremely online today and posted while I was writing this, but if you're up for it, splicing should also work.)

Splicing wires isn’t something I’m comfortable doing.  Thanks for the suggestion though.

The more I think about it, the more getting another adapter makes the most sense.

The brand for the adapter I have now is Belkin.  Think it was made in 1995-1998 (‘95 because of the date on the box, but there was a piece of paper taped to the box saying it was purchased in ‘98).
