Appletalk file sharring frequently pauses

This question covers a lot of territory, but I'm sticking it in software because I suspect that's where the problem lies.

I have managed to get System 7.5.3 (PB520) and 9.2.2 (G3 iMac) to talk to each other using an AAUI transceiver, a Cat 5 crossover cable, turning file sharring on on the PB 520 side (the G3 sees the PB520 through the network browser). Appletalk is on for both sides.

It works... but every 30 seconds or so, both systems completely pause for about 5 to 10 seconds. It's extremly annoying.

Any ideas?

1. Technically, yes. At the moment, no.

2. I pretty sure I'm using classic networking. All I do on the Powerbook side is activate AppleTalk, switch to EtherTalk, and turn on file sharring. Once that's done, the iMac sees the PB through the Network Broswer and can mount its hard drive on the desktop.

It turns out I'm using Classic Networking (MacTCP) on the PB side. Is this okay, or should I switch to OpenTransport?

Switched to Open Transport on the PB. Same problem. Verison is 1.1.

For connecting my SE/30 to my iBook G3 900MHz/32VRAM or Mac mini, I use 7.5.5, OpT 1.3, AppleShare 3.7.4 and that's about it. They made some changes in the 7.5.5 for networking.

I don't know if that's exactly what you need, but that's what I use, and aside from dropping out every two hours or so (could be auto disconnect, never tried a continuous connection transfer like this 280GB, 40GP image to see what it would do: because that exceeds my HDD by over 1000%, I'd just copy it over to the Mac mini) I really don't have a problem.

System 6 ethernet networking is a real mystery.

Well, I do notice that if I go through AppleShare in the chooser, everything seems to work okay. Still slow, but I suspect that's normal when considering that 68k Macs had slow-ass ethernet.

The frequent pauses when nothing is going on are gone at least.

I guess the solution is to NOT mount the PB drive through the network browser, but to mount it through AppleShare in the chooser.

Be interesting to know if other people have had this problem.

I don't know how much bandwidth you loose from the transceiver, but most Ethernet cards in this era are 10BASE-T cards, which max out at 10Mbps (about 1280kb/sec) theoretical limit. The max I have seen is 66kb/sec.

Fortunately, it beats the heck out of floppy disks.
