Apple Share using Basilisk II (on Windows) and a Null Modem... working.

So, I've been playing with my null modem cable a bit and got X/Y/Z modem type transfers working last month between my Macintosh and Windows 10 PC using Basilisk II, https://www.savagetaylor.com/2020/11/24/usb-serial-file-transfer-from-basilisk-ii-to-a-68k-macintosh/

So I decided to see if I could also get AppleTalk working with Basilisk II.   I'd read a few places that you could not directly use the null modem cable, so I decided to try indirectly.

Turns out Apple Remote Access Personal server runs quite happily in Basilisk II, I just needed the CLL files for a null modem connection, and it turns out Open Transport PPP has those and they work with ARA :)

As I type this my Macintosh SE (running 7.1) is copying a file to shared folder sitting in Basilisk II (running 7.5.5) on Windows 10 system.

At the moment I have Basilisk II as the host, but I don't see any reason why I can't do this in reverse and use this to grant Basilisk to my entire Apple Talk network.

Next, can I'm going to try TCP/IP over Apple Talk and see if I can use Basilisk II as a bridge to the internet vs. the Linux options I've seen.

It never even occurred to me to try any of this.  This is well worth knowing.

Working and documented.  I've also updated my images to contain the correct files for doing the installation so you don't have to hunt.

https://www.savagetaylor.com/2020/12/15/appletalk-from-windows-linux-osx-to-a-68k-macintosh-using-basilisk-ii-apple-remote-access-personal-server-ara-ps-and-a-usb-serial-null-modem-cable/

I'm now about to use Basilisk II to "call in" to my LC 475 using a null modem cable, and Basilisk II can be seen on my LocalTalk network and can see all the shared folders on my LocalTalk network.

So for $45 USD you can connect a modern system to your LocalTalk network.

Next experiment.... can I do TCP/IP over apple talk with this?

So ARA + OT + IPNetRouter = surfing the web on my LC 475 and SE using Basilisk II as the gateway. Will add a new blog entry that builds on my AppleTalk post
