apple iie programs

As said before on a previous thread, a recently acquired an apple iie.

I've been playing around with it during the last couple of days.

The only minor problem is that the last time i used an apple II I was 5 years old. That means, that I can only remember some games from that era.

I've download quite a bit of software already, however, there's quite a lot out there (thousands of games for example) and trying everything is impossible in the limited time I have. I was wondering if people here could recommend me some software that I should try out. Also, besides using some old programs, what else can I do with my apple II?

A problem I have encountered is that games such as BattleChess are impossible to use since the image is quite blurry (i can't even read the text). Is there any way to change the graphics mode so it is more usable?

Finally, I tried chessmaster 2000, and I only managed to make it work on an emulator. When i copy the image to the apple II prodos or dos 3.3 show either i/o error, or an empty disk. If I try to boot it it just shows garbage. I get the same problem in one of the emulators (Virtual ][).

Sorry for the long post,

and thanks for helping!

Unfortunately old programs are the only ones that are available for the IIe. No one has written a commercial program for the II line in about 10 or 15 years. There are one or two people who have written a new game or two, but those are few and far between and are simply done by users like us. What type of things do you want to do with the IIe? If you can give us an idea we can possibly recommend programs.

As to your your problem with Battle Chess what monitor do you have the computer hooked up to? That might be the source of your trouble with the blurry screen. As to Chessmaster I'm not sure why it's giving you trouble. I'll try copying it to my GS and see if I can get it to work.

One possibilty you could explore is trying to learn to program the IIe yourself. That way you can come up with a program to do, hopefully, exactly want you want to on the computer. Applesoft is an easy to use language that is built into the IIe. Other prgramming languages can be downloaded from Asimov and other sites on the web. So your options are wide open.

Best thing I've found for the Apple II (and what I use my IIc+ mostly for) is BASIC. It's built in, it's easy, and it can be a blast to type crap into your computer and watch it do what you told it to do. I love playing with my Apple II for that very reason.

Same here... Applesoft is very easy to get into and there's tons of documentation available online. Assembly Language is also surprisingly accessible, once you make the mental leap.

Hi,

I don't mind using old programs, sorry if I gave the wrong idea. I was wondering which classic software (i've seen tons in asimov and other websites) is worth using. So please recommend me games!

On the monitor side, I'm using an amiga monitor with composite video in.

Programming seems to be a cool idea,

I've seen some docs on the internet about applesoft basic, but they don't seem like good tutorials. They're more like FAQs, ie how an I make applesoft basic play sound?

I know nothing about basic, i've never used it.

So it would be good if you could point me out to some godo tutorials.

I'm use to working with C, c#.net and Objc/cocoa so i don't need to learn basic concepts. Assembler sounds quite interesting, again, any good tutorials?

Thanks again, Nahuel

Okay, here's a suggestion for a few Role Playing Games, all the Bard's Tale games, Wizardry 1-3 and 5, Might and Magic I and II (if you can find copies online that aren't .nib, which is impossible to transfer back to real disks). Also possibly any of the Ultima series, I have them but haven't played them, though there are people who swear by them.

Elite (the father of the space trading/fighting genre), F-15 Strike Eagle, Silent Service (a great submarine sim), Destroyer, The Hunt for Red October, any of the Carmen SanDiego games, Summer Games I and II, Winter Games, Space Rogue, Sundog, just as starters.

If you've looked through the Asimov archive you know those are just the tip of the iceberg.

As far as Applesoft programming go to www.1000bit.net and get to the Apple Computer section under Documentation. You'll find a couple different books from Apple about Applesoft programming. Another thing you could do is check eBay auctions for Applesoft books.

Hope this helps,

Magnus

But homebrew is what the Apple II was all about. :D At least in the early days. Speaking of which, you can experience modern homebrew action on an Apple II+:

Find the old Apple manual "A Touch of Applesoft Basic". It should get you started. If I find an extra one around my house sometime I'll let you know--I may have a few copies in my manual boxes.

As far as programs are concerned, one that I'd look for is Broderbund's FantaVision. It's an old-school animation program and is quite addicting. Try to find a copy with the manual; it is one of those texts that is worth reading when you are trying the program out. (I normally don't rave about manuals...although most Broderbund ones were pretty good).

During the past few days I have found quite a bit of information about applesoft basic (thanks for the help). It has been fun, however I'm more interested in programming in assembler. The problem here is that the documentation is not as extensive as it is in the case of basic. I found a bit in some text documents but that's it.

I was wondering if anybody could point me out to some good tutorials on asm on the apple ii.

Thanks, Nahuel

I'm having daily fun with my Apple II (an Apple //c, actually) by using it as a serial text-terminal tied to my Mac. (Gave the same a go with an eMate 300, actually - but sticking w/ the //c for day-to-day.)

Good stuff.

As for game recs, my favorite Apple II game is probably Conan: Hall of Volta, but some other goodies are:

- Rescue Raiders

- Choplifter

- Star Blazer

- King's Quest

Have fun!

Nice setup there. I noticed that you're one of the few who are using MMGR, and must comment that it is a really wonderful program. (Reliable z-modem and terminal emulation, compared to other Apple II terminal emulators.) I really should setup my system in a similar manner one day. It would make a handy setup for writing.

I too am getting a //e. What I'm wondering is if there is anyway to avoid using floppies? Are there any cards that I can buy that load the images from like a CF card? I know it'll be expnsive but I'm willing to bite the bullet.
