Apple IIe card for LC - Prodos Partition Size

Hmm, tough call around if this should go in this forum or the A2 forum - I'll try here.

So my new (old) Apple IIe card for my LC turned up today so quick as a flash I fired up Apple HD Setup to repartition my HD to include a Prodos partition. Then I stopped and thunk. The documentation recommends no bigger than a 10MB prodos partition - is that just because back in the day they didnt figure us crazy fools would still be playing around with this stuff in 2008 and need or want a 32MB partition - or is there some limitation with the Apple IIe card for the LC to means its not a good idea to create a bigger one?

My HD is only 250MB, and who knows if I'd fill the 32MB partition - but I dont really want to fill up the 10MB one and then have to repartition again....

Cheers,

It isn't a LC IIe card, but I've frequently used 30 MB (or so) ProDOS partitions on a IIgs, without a hitch. I generally keep the partitions a tad smaller just to avoid pushing it. Who knows how those filesystems will react if the partition is slightly larger than it should be.

ProDOS is limited to a 32MB, or rather, 32768kB partition. You can read something about mixed HDD (or CD) storage in ProDOS and HFS partitions here.

You may recall the Big Whoop when Mac System 4.1 (System Software 2.01, April 1987) got to be able to address more than 32MB.

Well, I bit the bullet and went for a 32MB partition. Apple HD Setup seemed to know exactly what the limit was for a Prodos partition - so I figure the 10MB reference in the docs is just a reflection of the times and the fact that 10MB was probably a big amount for an Apple II at the time.

Anyhoo, I've reinstalled 7.5.5 and as soon as I finished unstuffing some stuff, I'll install my IIe card and give it a blast.

Cheers all,
