Ah, temptation strikes again

Someone local is selling a batch of 14 G4 & G5 xserves for $350. That's $25 each. I'd happily pay $25 each for a couple but what would I do with 14? I know the G4 & G5 towers aren't really selling locally so would a xserve sell at all or would I likely be stuck with $350 worth of stuff I don't use

Is Vancouver close enough to run across to the U.S. to post a bunch of them out USPS? I'd be up for that and maybe some others of the gang down here would be too.

Sometimes I feel like it costs more to ship stuff across the Canadian Border than across an Ocean. :-/

If you have the room, I'd get the lot anyway. Keep a good one and put the rest in the attic/basement.

Makes me wonder if "one day" they'll be like ANS's - very few left and a handful of collectors that would still PAY for one.

I have a dual 1.33 G3 xserve I use as a desktop. Since it has no audio card I use a USB audio in/out which works just fine. I also slapped in a USB 2.0 card and it makes an awesome 10.5 mac, plays 360p youtube without problems. It's downfall is being loud as hell. It covers the entire desk holding drinks, 22 inch lcd and the cat easily. If you have the room, an xserve makes a decent computer.

Apple didn't make a G3 XServe to my knowledge. That would be cool to have an XServe! I could probably use the G5 as a website server, if I ever get one and learn HTML. Like that will happen.

I haven't been stateside in a while so have no passport which means I can't easily go across to mail anything

An xserve would make a decent enough desktop but I already have a dozen or so G4s including a couple of 1.42s and a 1.8 DA not to mention the G5s that I don't use.

Buying and keeping them isn't really an option. Income is minimal and I don't like dipping into savings too much. Space is also at a premium. At present I believe I have over 200 computers and accessories in storage and 50-60 in my apartment. I can't put any more in storage. The one's in the apartment are largely out of the way and don't annoy the girlfriend but adding more may change that

You'd turn around and resell them on eBay for $100 each; basically giving them away and making a killing in the process. A no brainer really. I'd kill for a shot at that. Keeping one and selling the rest would yield a nice $1300 pay day. Take that and buy something sweeeet!

Very doubtful: Apple sold basically hardly any ANSes. Though the Xserve didn't exactly set the world on fire, they still managed to sell a decent chunk of them.

That's ... more possible, though I would still recommend checking the going rate before diving in. Specifically, what they actually sell for, not what they're listed for.

Besides, the ANS gives you the chance to own an Apple the size of a mini fridge. THAT'S WORTH DOLLARS DAMMIT. ;)

(owner of an ANS 500 and 700)
