7.6.1 Install Problem on PM9600 Enhanced?

I had some hard drive problems and am reinstalling systems on my FrankenMac at home which looks like a PM9600 Enhanced (Kansas) to Apple System Profiler. I'm trying to run my 7.6.1 installer and keep getting a message that it doesn't work on this Mac. The ironic thing is that I'm booted into 7.6.1 when this happens.

However, I suspect that the installation disk may be trying to install 7.6.0 first and then update it to 7.6.1. And the PM9600 Enhanced needs 7.6.1 or later. Any suggestions to get it to work? Were there any magic work arounds that we've all forgotten? Hold down the "option" key when clicking "Install" or some such?

I could do the install on a different machine and then copy it back, but I don't have an older machine convenient to hand right now.

The ironic thing is that this is actually a Umax S900 logic board in a PC case with adapted ATX power supply, but because I replaced the ROMs on the S900 board with 9600E ROMs, it looks like a 9600E to system software. If I hadn't replaced the ROMs I probably wouldn't have this problem.

Do you think that instead of the ROM revision the 1GHz G3 upgrade could be foiling the installer? I could dig an older CPU card out of the attic... That would probably be easier than installing on a different machine and copying it over.

The CPU card doesn't have its own ROM. Your best bet would be to either swap ROMs or use an older machine.

:) The ROMs are soldered down. There's no ROM DIMM slot. It'd be easier to swap the logic board than to swap the ROMs. I have another five S900 boards in the attic. The attic is about 150F this time of year...

Have to go up there just before sunrise.

I'd say install 7.6.1 onto another compatible Mac or supported clone's hard drive, then duplicate the System Folder and somehow get that duped folder over to the FrankenMac. "Bless" the folder after copying it over and voila!
