I've recently gone through and cleaned up 3 400k drives. The mechanics were all cleaned up according to http://www.vintagemacworld.com/400kflop.html, which is great. None of them had the click of death described here http://lowendmac.com/tech/400k.html, but all of them needed the head spacing adjustment described here http://lowendmac.com/tech/after.html.
However, I was only successful in semi-permanantly adjusting the spacing on one of the three drives. The other two seemed a bit more picky, and just when I had it all adjusted well and the floppy could be read successfully, I'd apply the nail polish as described to hold the screw in place, wait until it dried, reassemble the drive, and it wouldn't be readable anymore. Presumably the jostling during reassembly was just too much.
Does anyone have tips on the head spacing adjustment? It seems to be pretty tedious, requiring near removal of the controller board to access the screw, adjust it, reconnect the controller board, connect back to a machine, test, repeat until working.
