I just received these yesterday from one of my Dad's friend's nephew. They came from a high school I remember right. There are no Hard Drives and one's missing a PSU, but each has dual PIII 1.4Ghz CPUs and 2GB RAM. Also received a Belkin OmniView Pro2 8-Port KVM Switch.

Couldn't find any guides to setup these with Linux or *BSD, but from what I could find it sounds like I can just boot up a CD and install as soon as I get some Ultra 320 SCSI HDs. :D

Never messed with rack servers before, so it'll be a interesting experience for me.

This will give you an idea of how load they are. ;) (Reading the comments, not all are this loud, which would explain why when I booted one it was quiet, and the other not.)

That wasn't a vid of my server. Just the same model. I don't have any SCSI drives yet. But yes, it will be loud with SCSI drives too.

No, definitely not in my room!

P.S. Oh, and it turns out the other one is loud too. One of the DIP switches was in the wrong position, preventing it from booting. Hence the quietness. :p

Oh ive got a 5U Intel Dual HT Xeon server and the thing sounds like a airplane taking off when running. I ran it 24/7 for awhile but it used like 600W at an idle. 10 SCSI drives make alot of noise, along with something like 8 fans!

I've got a DL360 G1, G2, and G3. G1 and G2s are both Dual PIII 1.2s, G3 is two 2.8 Xeons.

They all sound like death when you start them up. I love 1U fans.

I have a load of DL380 G4 servers at work which I can have if I want them, but MAN are they loud. They are intended to be in a server room for a reason :)

Oh, and to install anything on them you must first configure the RAID controller to set up a virtual drive. It's not very difficult, and to get into the config screen you just press a key combination (It will prompt you).

It is not inside the system setup, because the RAID controller has its own BIOS.

You can also download a bootable CD from Compaq's website which has a windows-like GUI for setting everything up. Rack servers are fun, and you might need the experience in the future. All servers are more or less the same when it comes to configuration.

If you have a question, just ask me, because I have been administering servers like this for some years :)
