20inch intel iMac 2006 problems

Today I rescued a 2006 20inch iMac from the dump. However when getting it home I found that the LCD panel is damaged in the bottom right and there are display glitches all over the screen. The operating system also freezes after a few minutes.

I hear this is a common problem with the graphics card (mine is an ATI Radeon X1600), is there anyway of repairing this iMac or is it best to just take it back to the dump?

I believe the 2006 iMacs use nonstandard LCDs. Replacement is possible with an equivalent LCD, but for the graphics card issues, I'm not sure. Maybe somebody out there has made a GPU killer for these iMacs, or maybe there is a software solution.

I think I'd pull the RAM, and the hard drive, then send the rest on its way. I did the same on my sister's old '06 C2D iMac after her daughter and a couple friends decided to use it as a support for a tent, causing it to fall on its face on the desk in late 2014. Replaced the machine with one of the 2009 21.5" models, which let me upgrade from 10.7.5 to 10.8.5. Need to do some work on that machine soon and get it updated to something that can use at least Firefox 78, instead of Firefox 48...
