2 compacts

Ok first time posting here with real macs...

There is a old place in my tiny town that bills itself as a flea market, In reality its a gigantic shed full of flat out junk, tons and tons and TONs of crap computers. Apparently what they are doing is "pre recycling" more or less stripping out the electronics for proper recycling, and selling off the plastic and metal as bulk scrap (not a bad idea considering they had about 45 palettes of old PC cases)

so while wondering around in there I found a couple old compacts, god only knows in what condition but I repair electronics for a living so Ill poke around

first up Mac SE, I don't know too much about these things but it has 2 floppy slots one being covered up and a led peeking out of a hole, says to me, hard drive, also has a radius tagged full page monitor port installed on the back, case is slightly yellow, and very dirty with some black scuffs, but nothing broken

next up is a performa 200, this things case is in excellent condition, with just the slightest hint of yellowing, unfortunately when I snagged it about 2 cups of water poured out of the bottom, so that should be fun

no keyboards or mice, totally unknown condition but only 2$ for both machines ... along with my //c its going to be a busy summer of restoring computers!

they also had a monitor /// but I decided to leave it (unless someone really wants a who knows what condition monitor ///)

Sucks that water was in the Performa 200... hopefully, when it dries out there isn't too much damage.

aye, good news was the water was not dirty so its not like I poured out 3lbs of rust

Ill have to sit on these for a little while anyway so it should have plenty of time to dry out, needless to say Ill have to inspect both machines before I dare plug anything into them

and its in perfect condition, but just a silkscreen

worse case and the guts are just beyond gone :O , Ill make someone a shipping only deal for the bucket, but im getting ahead of myself, as of now its still a dirty brick dripping water in my trunk lol

least it didnt end up in their chipper

I have more hope for the SE, but at the same time, its less of an interest, and in a little bit worse shape cosmetically

Ill try and get pictures as soon as I convince the wife to not kill me ;)

That Performa 200 looks to be in great shape. It is a little bit of a rarity.

As for the water that was sloshing around inside, unless the machine was turned on wet (which is highly unlikely, under the circumstances in which you found it), about the only things that could have been destroyed are the drives and the speaker unless rust had set in. If only dirty, it should clean up once disassembled with more water from the tap, and if left to dry, well, you never know your luck: a working Performa 200 hopefully awaits.

Otherwise, I think that if I only had the good plastics, I would rebuild from a scrap Classic/ Classic II.

yes its in very decent shape for sitting in a puddle in a scraping shed / dump, I have a pic of the rear but its fuzzy and not that helpful, but none of the connections on the back show more than a few speckles of surface rust

I won't lie, if you decide to gut the Performa, I'd be interested in the case for an ITX project, because I'm a loser that way. I still think this is a really nice haul, considering where you found them.

MK *yee ha for marz

I got the performa on the bench and took it apart, this is the one that was IN water when I snagged it

when I took it apart I was pleasantly surprised to find a very little hard water stain on the inside of the case, A little bit of corrosion on the frame on that same side and just basic spots of surface rust on a couple of the ports

SO I fired it up, and got bars (BAH), after a little while the screen started to fade out, so I didn't get ultra super lucky and get a booter right off the bat, but it could be much much worse

since the logic board is easiest to remove I opted to inspect it first, there are some questionable areas where it looks like flux was not fully cleaned and may be causing trouble, I cleaned that up with a flux pen and a iron, followed by alcohol + acid brush

moving along,... the speaker output looks funky as crap, and then there is this

performa200%20issue1.JPG

which is a great excuse to use Chip Quik

meanwhile the analogue board is showing issues, I will work my way to that

so anyway the 200 logic is toast, for the moment, after cleaning the corrosion I found some broken leads near the cpu, so that has to be popped off to see if I can jump it, which should be fun ... If I decide against it expect it to be showing up on the trading post sans logic board (you can have the roms though), the analog section of the computer seems OK sometimes, other times it is really dim. I have not looked at the analog board yet

Moving on for the moment, the super dirty SE fires up "out of the trunk", it is not loaded up with memory, has a flickering screen :( , a radius 67khz full page card installed, and I cant tell if the hard drive is blank or non functioning, but since I dont have a adb keyboard or mouse that does not matter much at this point

As I just told my wife, that is ok because I wanted to whip up a open source Ps/2 keyboard - mouse adapter anyway, and already have the parts (based on a attiny84 microcontroller)
