This is not true for the G5 dual-pump Quad. As opposed to the 2.5 and 2.7 G5s they have another CPU heatsink which doesn't have an O-ring since it's a solid copper block.

The G5 Quads usually don't leak. There's probably air in the LCS after all those years. Every G5 Quad LCS should get an overhaul, they are more than 15 years old. No LCS holds up for that long. Also the cooling block for the second CPU is probably clogged. There's no way getting around a LCS...

Well the G5 Quad CPUs have a TDP of 125 Watts – Each! Plus the logic board uses up around 80 Watts as well. The whole system idles at around 220 Watts. If I let Unreal Tournament 2004 run with my Radeon X1900 GPU, the system gobbles 300 Watts which is half a toaster.

From a purely physical standpoint all a computer does is to convert electrical energy into heat.

I'm currently working on my Quad as well, revamping the whole cooling system. For testing I'm doing the same. My house is well insulated and I basically don't need to heat it, only the occasional gaming or G5 testing session is enough to stay warm. I also use the computers to dry some underwear.

Update again: I rebuilt and flushed the lcs again completely and interconnected both loops to form a two pump single loop. Both pumps run fine, both processors run fine. Seems like the system was still clogged and needed another thorough flush.

So I returned to my Quad to do an overhaul of the lcs again. I was shocked to find a leaking top loop after letting the computer sit unused for 7 months. The top loop was full of white gunk and the whole lcs was still smelling strongly of vinegar, even after I flushed it multiple times back in...

Doooooon't run vinegar as a coolant. It will gas out and expand, causing the lcs to explode. Don't ask me how I know...

Update: After refilling the loop twice I'm now pretty certain that the upper pump is dying. Sometimes the CPU idles at 70°C (!) while the lower CPU is at 33°C. Tiny air bubbles in the clear tubing don't move at all. The coolant is very hot though, so I think the pump is spinning, but not as fast...
