I have a 15" PowerBook G4, model number A1095.
It already has the dead memory slot problem, so I put a 1GB stick in the working slot and removed the one in the faulty slot, after which it chimed normally and recognised the 1GB of RAM. But then it started showing signs of HDD failure, finally...
Thanks for the advice! Semiprofessional, at any rate. It's something I've wanted to dabble in for many years, but never took seriously enough to do something about. I guess I want to work with a printer who can do the proofing for me. And that I should make an entry in my budget for a set of...
I use a 7 year old LaCie photon20vision, which was pretty high end at the time. I know CRTs degrade over time, but what about LCDs? I might have a colour sensitive project coming up, so I ran the calibration assistant. It looks better to my eye now, but am I getting the right colours...
So for a reliable LocalTalk network one would need a router for every four devices? How did that compare to 10base2? It would be fun for historical purposes to have a 10base2 segment, as a great deal of my Macs have BNC connectors instead of RJ45. I would have to find a bridge, though. There is...
I wonder if it could be possible to implement LocalTalk over a Keyspan adapter. It would be cool to put LocalTalk on a modern server, but it's probably not worth the time and headache.
How did the zones work with EtherTalk and TokenTalk, was it possible to define zones on non-LocalTalk hardware?
I'll add the Shiva routers to your list. Ethernet, modems, serial sharing, etc.
Hard to beat (at the time, late 80s) for small offices with a handful of Macs and a couple of printers, though. More of a problem for offices which included IBM machines.
I wonder how much thought Apple gave to Ethernet and TCP/IP after seeing it at Xerox PARC and Brown University. Apparently...
It was incredibly neat when it first came out, and it's a damn shame it wasn't enough to make Macintosh Office a success. But like the floppy drive it was long overdue for replacement. I imagine Steve Jobs would have killed it and advocated Ethernet instead, had he been given a couple more years.
Has anyone tried using Mac OS X printer sharing with classic Macs?
I created a new LaserWriter 8 printer with LPR and my MacBook's IP address and the printer's queue name, but when I pressed 'verify' I get the message "The printer cannot be verified." When I try to print it tells me that the...
I was hacking along quite nicely in System 7 at that age. But to get her started At Ease sounds like a good idea, then limited Finder and lastly full Finder as her reading improves. Kids learn these things very fast.
Edit: I remember OS9 having At Ease-like functionality built in, look in the...
There aren't really that many good printers on the auction sites, and it would have to be local pickup. I actually saw a dirt cheap colour HP just down the road from here, but when I checked the cost of the toner, even generic, I saw why they were selling it.
I think I'll take my chances with...
Actually I got $345 from Swedish Xerox site, converted from Swedish currency. $308 came from an online low-cost dealer, they don't mark up their products nearly as much as the rest of them
I read the help for Mac OS X printer sharing. It accepts PostScript jobs using the LPD protocol. But it...
Cheapest I can find new with both network and PostScript is the Xerox Phaser 3250DN at $308. Oddly enough it requires at least 10.3 or Windows 2000, you would think the point of PostScript was that you only needed a PPD file.
Is it possible to run printer sharing and GhostScript on my G5 and...
I figured 'old' to this forum would mean at least 20 years old.
I have never understood why printer compatibility is even an issue, or why we need specific drivers at all. Why are PostScript printers so expensive, and what's the point of custom printer languages?
I was actually hoping to find an old wired ethernet printer that I can print to from my old Macs as well as from the new ones, but it's very inconvenient to track down the right model, and one that has all the parts.
I think I'll go with the Brother. Since I won't be printing every day...
I have one that I've been meaning to upgrade, to use with my SCSI slide scanner and as a general OS 9 machine. Very easy to work on.
A Sonnet upgrade is definitely on the wish list. A powerful G3 or G4 with trouble free onboard SCSI is golden, and as far as I understand it, a Beige G3 isn't...
I try as much as I possibly can to stay paper free, and I think PDF is one of the greatest inventions in the history of computing. But every once in a while I need to send a letter, and using my old 1960s mechanical typewriter will probably raise questions what century I'm living in.
I've been...
Or maybe a Unix workstation section, and perhaps an Intel Mac section. Not sure what do to with the Atari ST and Amiga followers, though, technically they are 68ks too, closer to the scope of 68kmla than, say, SPARC and MIPS stations.
Personally, I'd like to see a few sections merged. Too many...
