Need help with MicroMac Carrera040 in a SE/30

Hello,

A year or so ago I purchased a grab bag of parts on Ebay that included a MicroMac Carrera040 http://micromac.com/products/carrera040.html. The card is the 33mhz model designed for a IIsi and comes with an adapter card similar to the Daystar IIsi adapter that as a lower PDS slot for the accelerator and an upper slot for another PDS card:

I tested this card in my IIsi by first creating a clean install for all macs of System 7.1 on an empty partition on my hard drive. The drive is an IBM 7200 IDE drive connected to an ACARD AEC 7720U SCSI to IDE card that I have used successfully in both the IIsi and SE/30. Using system picker I set this partition to be the system that is booted to. I installed the Carrera040 1.8 control panel and its associated Startup Carrera init. When I booted the system all was well and the 040 was functioning:

I assumed that like the Daystar 030 and 040 accelerators that are interchangeable in a IIsi and SE/30 that this would be the case with the Carrera040. I attempted to get the Carrera040 to run in my SE/30 by mounting the MicroMac accelerator and IIsi adapter card shown above on top of an Asante network card with a right angle PDS connector. Before doing this I checked on the IIsi with Slot Info whether there were any slot address conflicts with the MicroMac and Asante cards and there were not because the MicroMac card, like the Daystar products, does not use a slot address ($09, $0A, $0B or $0E). I took the drive that was used with the IIsi and attached it to the SE/30 (stock ROM, 8MB RAM and recently recapped) and when it booted I got this error:

and when OK is clicked, I get this error:

Sorry, a system error occurred.

“Startup Carrera”

address error

To temporarily turn off extensions, restart and hold down the shift key

(Restart)

I got this error whether the Carrera040 1.8 control panel was in any of it's positions (Slow, Medium, Fast or Auto).

Per the manual that came with the Carrera040 it stated that it was compatible with the IIsi, IIci, IIcx and IIx. I figured I would try the Wish I Were control panel to have the SE/30 act as one of the supported machines. I had to rename the Carrera Startup Init so that it would load after the Wish I Were init. After that was sorted out I tired all 4 of the supported machines in Wish I Were in the SE/30. With each during the boot process in 7.1 the Wish I Were icon would appear followed by the 040 icon of the Carrera040 then the system would freeze and I had to use the power switch to reboot. This happened with Wish I Were set as a IIsi, IIci, IIcx and IIx. To test and see if there was an issue with the Wish I Were and Carrera040 inits/control panels, moved the MicroMac cards and hard drive mentioned above back into the IIsi and tried Wish I Were set as a IIci, IIcx, IIx and SE/30 and all failed exactly as the SE/30 did with a freeze after the WiW and 040 icons appeared during 7.1 boot. When Wish I Were was set as a IIsi the IIsi booted and ran fine.

Being that Wish I Were couldn't get the SE/30 to boot as a supported machine or that the IIsi would only boot as an IIsi using WiW I am guessing that the Carrera040 or its associated init will need to be hacked to work. I would assume somewhere in the code is list of supported macs (IIsi, IIci, IIcx and IIx) and that it might be possible to replace a supported device with the correct entry for a SE/30. I have used Resedit to hack OS 7.6.1 and 8.1 to run on an SE/30 with a IIfx ROM but beyond that I am stumped without guidance as I am not a programmer. I found a list of Gestalt IDs and their associated hex code on Gamba's site http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/os8_68030.html however I don't know where in the Carrera040 control panel or init to make any needed change to swap in a SE/30 as a supported device. This is a screen of Resedit showing what is available the 040 control panel:

Can anyone provide me some direction on how I might edit the control panel so that it would support an SE/30?

Why am I bent on getting this accelerator running in a SE/30 when I already have a Daystar 040? Because when I had the MicroMac card installed in the IIsi I added a Micron Xceed card installed in the upper slot of the MicroMac IIsi adapter and was able to get an 040 accelerator to work with an Micron Xeed card. Per Gamba's site (and my experience trying it) a Micron Xceed card will not work with a Datstar 040 accelerator. If I can get the MicroMac Carrera040 to run in a SE/30, I might also be able to run it grayscale...

THx for any input on this!

Here is a grab of the Carrera040 running in the IIsi on OS 7.1 through the monitor out on the Xceed card:

You probably don't have one to test, but since that card is officially compatible with a IIsi, I would be curious to see if the accelerator worked in the SE/30 with a IIsi ROM installed, booting into OS 7.1 (which doesn't require any hack to run on the stock SE/30 ROM or IIsi ROM or IIfx ROM).

Would anyone here happen to know how to contact one of the design engineers who used to work for MicroMac?

(He he... ~tl and I posted at almost the same time. Fun to see we were thinking the exact same thing!)

Thanks tl and JDW. I did recently acquire a IIsi ROM off Ebay (first one I have seen in years of looking) and unfortunately it was a dud: http://68kmla.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=10589

I don't suppose that anyone has an extra IIsi ROM that they would be willing to trade for a IIfx ROM?? I have one of these already and and another on the way in a IIfx motherboard that I won last week.

Also, I did try the Carrera040 card with the IIfx ROM in another SE/30 and it didn't work...

But you also state that the Carrera manual mentions compatibility only with the "IIsi, IIci, IIcx and IIx."

Correct, the card is not compatible per the manual however I was hoping to get lucky with the IIfx ROM...

I see in another thread that Equill has a Carrera040. I know he has an SE/30, so it would be nice to see what experiments he has done.

Knubbel Mac mentions no support for the Carrera 040 on the SE/30. But then again, he probably didn't test a IIsi ROM in his SE/30 either.

Is there a different driver file for the IIsi and SE/30 versions of the card? If so, it may be worth trying the SE/30 version in the stock SE/30, as well as the IIsi version with a IIsi ROM.

There is not a separate driver, rather a single control panel and init that work for all of the supported macs of which the SE/30 is not on the supported list... Here is the download from Mac Driver Museum

Hi All,

I have some time this holiday weekend to revisit some of my vintage Mac projects. Since I posted this I have acquired a IIsi ROM and I am still getting the same error shown above. I think I need to continue exploring the possibility of hacking the Carrera CP and Init so I started a thread in Hacks & Development.
