Pre-production Macintosh Color Classic

MJ313

6502
This one was a bit of a gamble, but it looks like it paid off.  It came from Milpitas, CA and I am thankful it survived its cross country journey. It was packed well with thick chunks of foam.

After further review:

- Missing silkscreens on front

- Missing case label on bottom

- Serial Manufacturing date on case is November 1992 (sticker being on there is odd, and this date puts it three months ahead of release)

- Logic board -02 rev with noticeable differences from production. Includes components q3, q2 and also includes the jumper at j11

- Handwritten ROM labels

- SLICE DVT analog board

It boots, but there's a noticeable amount of pincushion. AB caps, I am assuming. The HD works but there's only normal applications on there. I think this was used by a young person as a home computer or something.

Still figuring this thing out... more to learn for sure.

Cool! Now you've got another to fill up the space from the one I got from you :)
Aha!! Only if it were that easy! That space was quickly filled up with a giant Epson scanner that rooted itself and is now unlikely to be moved without heavy machinery. The CC is sitting on a ratty old homemade bookcase. :-/

Watch out on those logic board caps, a couple are looking a bit fishy.
Roger that! The trick is going to be cleaning this board without ruining any of the tags. Lots of Q-tips and time... no bath on this one.

Interesting, what is special about the "DVT" analog board?

Cool machine though!
This site sums up the different stages better than I can:

Thanks!

The roms should just pull out right?  The side tag looks pretty standard. This is probably much like the non production 128's sent out to programers.  Mostly like production, but not to get out and have software made.  Didnt know what they were calling it, so no silk screen, its an LC type motherboard but different resolutions, so different roms, I am only guessing but would make sense.

Oh, wow.  I actually live in Milpitas.  Right under my nose.  [ :o) ]

It's a good place to find these, me thinks. [;)] ]'>

Correct on the ROMs. They should just pull right out. Never been scared to yank a rom before until now.

Sweet! Nice DVT machine!
Thanks!

Ooh... Hap's gonna be drooling at this one... :p
Doubt it, he's got a green one.

So much for the TAKKY donor. :-/
Takky will wait. Until then I'll get the 6400 board modified and see what I can stuff the guts into ... maybe something with little ABS blocks... :?:

Came to my senses, yanked the roms, yanked the FPU, yanked the RAM and VRAM and thoroughly cleaned the board. Then I recapped it with organic polymer caps.

*That fpu is a funny little guy to remove. I am wondering what other people use to remove them? I had a nifty through-hole cleaner tool that did the trick, but maybe there's an official tool or something.

AB will be dealt with at some future date. tbd.

Any chance you have dumped the rom and compared to the retail?

Good question! No...but not for lack of interest. Simply said, I don't know how to do such things at this point in time. Down the road and with some time to invest, I would love to figure it out.

I considered a sentimental re-conquest thread of sorts, but will instead just discuss here as it's related. This weekend I met up with JohnnyA up in Littleton where we swapped machines/greenbacks and yacked it up for a bit. I wound up with my old CC which I sold him a couple months ago and he got a recapped 460 (and the greenbacks, lol).  I appreciate his enthusiasm for the hobby, and was glad we could work out a good trade.

So the CC will serve a couple of purposes, the first of which is for some comparison shots. Lining these up side-by-side, here are some pics depicting differences 'under the hood'. Proto is on the... left.
