Macintosh Plus 1MB Clicking Sound. No image on Screen

Hi there everyone!

I've dug up an old Macintosh Plus my father had in the garage for quite sometime. I live in the Midwest so maybe storing a old piece of hardware such as this Mac outside when it's cold out is probably not the best thing. That's why I decided to bring the computer inside to warm up. Problem is when I turn the computer on, it makes this flicking noise. Made this noise for about two minutes then went way and it started to work. Unfortunately that was short-lived. Yesterday I was working on the floppy drive because it had problems with the ejecting floppies and all of a sudden, the floppy dropped to the metal part of the case and it started to do those clicks again. I tried leaving it on but I'm afraid it would burn the whole thing. Now I'm pretty sure this problem has been addressed on here but I can't seem to find a definite answer. Can someone please point me in the right direction in diagnosing what's wrong with the machine? I'd hate to sell the machine or destroy the machine even further. Here's a link to a video on my Macintosh Plus making these weird sounds. https://youtu.be/mBnfg4th8qg

Thanks!

like a flub-flub-flub? you have a failed component or even capacitors on the analog board.

Also please return your font size back to normal. its almost impossible to read on a PC.

Edit: Looking at the video, your flyback has seen a ton of hours and it wouldn't surprise me if its toast. At this point if you want to play with it or use it for any extended period of time, your going to want to get that analog board fully restored. All new caps, possibly a new flyback and its associated components and at that point it would be fine.

Yeah sorry about that. I posted that on my iPhone and it came out like that. But where is the best place I can get a cheap analog board? I'd want to restore the Mac but not trying to spend a lot of money on a machine.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money... Repair it! It is what we nornally do if something breaks, no need to replace the whole part! As technight says, replace all the caps, and consider replacing your flyback transformer. You may need some soldering practice, but it isn't too terribly difficult. Good luck :b&w:

Well if your good with troubleshooting, you could start with the Larry Pina book dead mac scrolls, it can be found free online if you look around. I remember this problem being in there for discussion.

But as time has gone by, that book has lost its accuracy a tiny bit but thats because of age.

Yeah, age and environmental factors make diagnosing these things harder.

Start by looking for leaking caps and go from there. The book is still worth a look at, especially if you have no idea what is going on. If your flyback transformer really is dying, then as Johnnya101 said, a new one isn't too bad.

Flub-flub is most of the times related with the optocoupler in the analog side, a square black part with 3 legs on each side, can be replaced easily, socketed in the Plus.

There's a chart I have saved wiTh all models. If you can wait till later I'll post it.
I'll be working (or try to work) on the machine in the next couple of weeks. So if anyone has more resources, I'll definitely take a look at all suggestions. Thanks all !!
