Any SD card I’ve used in a 1400 loaded things faster than the original HD. If you don’t “trust” them, back up your stuff. What serious work are you doing in a 1400 anyway.
I found the same to be true for my PB 1400. Additionally, without a HDD present, one enjoys the benefit of a completely noiseless operation, except occasional sound from the CD or Floppy module, when used. To have a slimline backup option, consider to use one internal SD card in place of the original HDD, and use a second one inside the PCMCIA slot. Use one as a backup drive.
That link - while for the correct item (IDE --->mSATA/M.2 SATA) that he is looking for - will actually take him to the wrong item on Amazon ... since the one he actually wants is "Currently Unavailable" on Amazon ... and apparently they are redirecting to a SATA ---> mSATA/M.2 SATA.
My 1400c has a 16GB CF card in it right now, but only because I received it that way and it’s good enough - I would have gone the SD route if I was upgrading it myself. CF works fine, but it’s super finicky finding a card that a laptop will play nice with. They’re also just expensive compared to SD, and slower.
I’ve yet to hear of anyone getting an msata adapter to work in a 1400 - it would be a bit overkill anyway.
. I don't trust SD cards or CF cards at all. They've always been slower than HDDs on any machine I've used them on, including connected externally via USB 3 or FW 800 on modern machines. If I put an SSD in an old computer its SATA with a reliable adapter or a native interface one.
This. This is why i use Samsung PM871b 128GB M.2 SSD + mSATA SSD to 2.5" IDE 44pin adapter =)
The Samsung has 'true' ATA and works like a charm
Be sure to pick one that accepts the full size 2260 variety
