Lido startup disks for early Macs

Hi everyone,

One very, very common question here is the chicken and egg issue for making startup disks and being able to use Lido to format a SCSI2SD when someone has a PC or is otherwise not able to copy things directly to the machine. I had an issue where, if you have only a single floppy drive, you cannot start in System 7 (which Lisa requires) and do floppy swapping (unlike System 6, which allows you to eject the startup disk) to insert a disk with Lido. My solution was to make a startup 1.4 MB floppy with a mini System file that has most pict and icon-based resources deleted that are not used, and making Lido into the Finder application. This way, you can start the machine up with the disk and Lido will start immediately so that you can format your SD card on the SCSI2SD. Then, you can proceed to use any sort of System installation that you need from other disks. This image is in Disk Copy 4.2 format, so you should be able to use Cider Press on a PC or some other equivalent to make the disk. I will also make one with the patched HD SC Setup if you would rather use that. This will work on any early Mac with a SuperDrive that does NOT require a System Enabler to run System 7.1 (my goal is eventually to make some with enablers). I also am going to work really, REALLY hard to pare down both Lido and the System to make an 800k version...but those can't be made on a PC into real floppies anyway.

If anyone wants or needs this, let me know. I want to make it available for those who need this type of thing to have.

Hi LaPorta, I think I did something similar a few years ago:

Also, when starting with a PC, for SCSI2SD you can either use one of my existing images, or initialize an image using an emulator

emulators: http://www.savagetaylor.com/2018/08/19/setting-up-your-vintage-classic-68k-macintosh-partitioning-your-hard-drive/

for emulators I read that Mame has improved its support, I need to do some testing.

Very nice! I think that these would need to be re-introduced if that is the case. Most people these days coming here with that issue don't seem to have access to the resource.

Hadn't thought of that, I just tried searching in good "macintosh scsi2sd" and my blog entry was the first result... didn't know that, kinda cool.
