BUG Pickles XA v2 Nubus graphics card

After a bit more speculation and some goose-chasing I was able to secure this guy even after missing the auction. TattleTech identifies it as the XA/Lite. The base board looks identical to @Nathan_A's example (save for some bodge wires likely due to it being rev C,) but the memory modules are not populated on the stacking side.

This card presents a 1024x1024 max resolution, though changing it from 1024x768 simply moves the bottom of the screen off my LCD, likely for a panning desktop but inoperable without drivers.

In the eizo1994_8.PDF document linked above it does specify a max of 1024x768 rather than 1024x1024, but the latter is exactly 3MB of framebuffer. From this it seems logical that the 2048x1024 max resolution would be 6MB, hence double the populated RAM on those cards. Stick all four of these cards together and you get 9MB, perfect for 2048x1536 at 24-bit color which is on the chart, so it's probably not just a panning virtual resolution. This also seems to be the RAM setup on the card in the PDF.

My biggest question is: other than the stacking modules and probably the ROM, could the rest of the card be identical? The low-end cards would have needed to include the more expensive RAMDAC but perhaps this streamlined manufacturing scheme provided for this overhead.

I'll see if I get lucky and can dig up any drivers that affect the quickdraw performance. First impressions were noticeably unaccelerated :)

were you bidding on the auction for the 24AW and 24A I got? :( I am trying to contact the seller that was showing drivers pictures in the auction page, but passing through Buyee seems quite impossible to directly contact sellers :(

They answered me today to... search 68kMLA forum :D :D :D

The auction infos for the 24AW had the switch configurations and they look the same as posted above. It would be so great if it were just a matter of dip switches to get the proper resolution...

To summarize, is it the following?

Nathan_A: Pickles XA Maximum resolution 1376x1024 Full color Maximum dot frequency 135Mhz
Jeremy: Pickles XA / Lite Maximum resolution 1024x768 Full color Maximum dot frequency 100Mhz

No device driver information at this time. Switch the resolution with the DIP switch on the card.

Since the product description by BUG was attached, I translated only the part of "2.1 display resolution".

Thank you so much for this translation!

Seems like this is correct. I'll see if the DIP switches on mine correspond to the same settings shown in the 24AW manual.

I had passed these both by, but I did download the auction pictures for future reference :)

Is it possible to contact sellers of ended items on Yahoo directly? I have very little experience with the proxy process.

Where'd you find that XA Lite? I have "watchers" setup looking for new stuff I might care about on a variety of sites, but no new cards like this were picked up by them. Which means either my search terms are wrong or my scripts aren't working correctly.

As a separate matter, we should try to merge our RAM stacks on a single card at some point and see what happens. Mine are the intermediate modules and yours look like they're the outer ones, and the images of the "Pro" card has both.

I'm surprised that they might have actually different speed RAMDACs on them since I assume they all use identical TI Video RAMDAC chips. Unless TI offered those things in different binnings?

I love finding listings searches won't catch. Never know what you'll see.

Visible in pic #2 and pic #9:

I actually lost the auction, but in a crazy turn I knew the guy who won, and he wasn't bidding on it for this.

I agree, we should make an effort to do some swap testing on these two. My questions are as follows:

1. are the two ROMs identical?

If so:

a) will swapping the memory modules change the card's identifier in TattleTech?

b) will either/both card output 2048x1536 with all four memory cards?

If not:

c) will swapping your ROM and memory cards onto my card allow my card to correctly output 1376x1024? - if this is true we would possibly just need the ROM from an XA/Pro to make 2048x1536 with all four modules.

In addition to these resolutions, Pickles XA / Pro, the top model in the series, enables ultra-resolution display in RGB 24-bit full color,

such as 1600x1200, 1600x1280, 1920x1080, 2048x1536 pixels, which has been used only for special purposes in the past.

@jeremywork Wow, there're so many interesting cards in that auction.  Is that EMS Memory card a NuBus memory card?  I've seen a few NuBus memory cards in the past.  Some allow you to side step the 128MB memory limit by creating a RAM disk, Gworld disk, or repurposing it as "VRAM."

I'm not quite sure what half of it is to be honest ;)

As far as Mac/Nubus stuff, I can identify one and a half SE/30 ethernet adapters, a Nubus Asante AUI+thin, ATTO SE IV, Radius Thunder IV GX 1152, this BUG card, three 601 PDS A/V cards, and an LC 575 board.

Good handful of pretty standard PCI/ISA/AGP cards too.

It's such a broad lot you can only assume it's from e-waste and with high potential of damage to cards - buyer beware I'd say, especially with shipping a long distance.

Ordinarily I'd agree, though this particular seller seems to have used this tactic heavily to liquidate a rather extensive collection, not typical of e-waste quality stuff.

If only I had discovered them *before* they were all ended O.o

Yes, or you can anyway contact them on Yahoo I guess. The point is that the proxy won't allow you to do it ( I asked twice explaining that I already won , and it was for the drivers... and they pointed me at 68kmla :D ) and in order to do it directly, you should register on Yahoo Japan, and the first request is for a Japanese phone number... that's where I am stuck at :(

In all those lots there was also maybe a half-dozen RasterOps Horizon/24 cards, which until these auctions I don't think I'd ever seen so much as a picture of one.

I agree though, we should figure out how to reach them.

the customer service of Buyee replied again that they got in touch with my seller and he said it is 30 years old stuff and he cannot help.

I wonder if they really passed on my message specifying that I just want the software he is showing in the auction pics... :(

I might have found someone in Japan to ask to write him anyway. I won't surrender easily about this :D

Unfortunately I have a more disappointing answer.

Prodding at mine a bit more, I noticed the Pickles color profiles and icon also appear in my control panel meaning this must be contained in the card's ROM, therefore not indicative of drivers being present in the System Folder :/

This. Coincidentally the seller's putting "Horizon 24" in one of the titles is what lead me here in the first place. Too little, too late to actually snag one though. Also interesting to see the Paintboard Pro used the same PCB as the Horizon 24. Perhaps only one was shipped with the DSP card (which I looked for but didn't see- plenty of MoviePak cards I'd love to have though.) Those winning bids were devastatingly low, hope none of these end up destined for gold/scrap recovery. One of those few times I'm crossing my fingers they were picked up by a reseller ;)

Well, in my first attempt to reach out to BUG I came up mostly empty handed.

Thank you for inquiring about our products.
Certainly it seems "Pickles-XA/Pro".
But unfortunately, I couldn't find any material because it was too old.
I'm sorry I can't help.

Sincerely,
Masumi Teramachi
Public Relations Officer
DMG MORI B.U.G. CO., LTD.

At least this gives the name of the card and strongly implies that it's the Nubus sibling to the PCI version of nearly the same name. Though that's not entirely useful considering the PCI version has only barely more information about it than the Nubus one. So, I need to see what I can figure out next.

I was able to get the card working without issue in a PM 7100/66 (that I thought was a 7100/80, since that's what's on the case, but that's a whole other story). The display connected to it only supports 640x480, so I couldn't test other resolutions. Though interestingly the card offers up a 2048x1024 resolution too. Selecting it doesn't appear to do much of anything though. There are also some built-in gamma entries which have "pickles" in the name. All color depths worked great from B&W up to Millions.

@olePigeon@Nathan_A tried and got the answer he pasted here. Maybe if we find a way to skip PR officers and go straight to support or something similar we could be more lucky but... which emails and where to find them?
