  1. so.. Ive been busy lately, as I've kind of alluded to in some of my build posts.. I've been keeping my eyes and ears open the past few months and have come up with quite a few acquisitions.. so since May... 3 SE/30s... one of which has been detailed in my "toledogeek's SE/30 build" thread 2 Color Classics.. one will be detailed in a future thread, an overclocked CCII board and a FPU & SSD 2 Mac Classics, one got turned into the "Power Mono Classic" and the other just showed up on my doorstep yesterday. 3 IIgs's... 2 have already been sold.   2. dont give up... i had one like that... i got mostly working, with the exception i cant get the SCSI to write. wash the board and use a nylon then a BRASS brush to get the crap off. if you have access to an ultrasonic tank, it'll do you good. let it run in the take for an hour or so. once you have the board reasonably clean, power it up and make sure it isnt shorted. full schematics are available, you'll have a tediously fun time getting things sorted... start with the address bus first, then data, then peripheral. with enough time/effort/money you'll save it.
  3. my PowerCache works flawlessly in the TwinSpark. its the 40Mhz socketed version.
  4. i did. i already had a DB15 wired up for these cards, so i just removed the DB15 connector from the MacCon's board and installed mine in the void left behind. I didnt want to hard wire the cable, as it would make it a pain to disassemble.
  5. you have the order right, and the powercache sits in the cache slot of the TwinSpark. I'll take a photo of the cut when i get home, but as long as you keep your cut just outside the traces you'll be fine. make sure you dont short the center layers together, as they are +5 and GND. jumpers are just removed, and i soldered kyner wire across the pads instead... which gives an extra 2mm of clearance in the front.
  6. I wanted to build a SE/30 as good as i could make it. it took a bit of doing, and too much money, but here goes. The specs: 68030 @ 40Mhz via Daystar Powercache Artmix TwinSpark 128MB RAM 16GB SSD via a SCSI2SD COLOR graphics /2nd monitor via a modified Radius Pivot Ethernet via an Asante MacCon As you can see, it hits all the upgrade wonderfulness.. more than twice as fast, external color graphics and you can get on the interwebz with it. First things first, Recap the logic board and your power supply. you're going to need an electrically perfect board to pull this off. a
  7. The speakers are about 1"x3"x1" so, easy to fit nearly anywhere. they are NOT shielded, so you have to keep that in mind in your builds.
  8. it was some random vizio that was getting scrapped. i have no idea what the model was. the audio amps in these are not very particular on load.. as long as it isn't below 4 ohm it should be ok. tiny speakers have come a long way in just the past 10 years, so its a worthy upgrade for a lot of older macs.
  9. thought about that, but i needed the CRT for a SE/30 that had some pretty nasty burn in. i might switch it once i find another CRT/hopeless compact. in the meantime, it'll be getting a bigger SSD once my compact flash cards arrive. Ive also swapped the speaker from a flat-panel TV in there. its smaller but much better sounding, i was able to aim it down though the front vents.

I found a laptop "blower" style fan to fit next to the heatsink, so now the temps are in the happy range. it just barely fits between the RAM and ROM/cache SIMMs. I'm running the rear fan as in intake and not exhaust, which seems to work better. the rear fan is running @ 8V and the CPU fan at about 2.5, which is enough to keep it cool and quiet. its ran all night and still just slightly warm to the touch. the ethernet card arrived yesterday, so now its on the interwebs. i found yet another 9" SVGA Monochrome monitor on eBay.... so i bought that one too. who knows where that one will e

But no, its not epic, it was a convenient hack/case mod job using what i had laying around. it required no real technical skill or knowledge. it took about 6 man hours total, so no real struggle, things worked out pretty naturally. that being said, it accomplished what i was shooting for with all the SE/30 upgrades... a fast, greyscale compact mac. just this is a bit of a cheat (powerPC) but it cost less than the SCSI2SD and RAM for the SE/30.
  12. the monitors come up on eBay every once in a while, its an old Point of Sale monitor, it's actually multisync! (640x480, 800x600) and connects though VGA. i just used one of those NEC mac adapters. other than that, i used the video out board that was on the performa. So, MoBo edge connector ->ribbon cable -> video out board -> DB15 to VGA adapter. i could of saved some space if i went and wired it up directly, but i had space to spare, and it was kind of a "lazy sunday" build, so i didn't want to sink too much time/thought in it. i bought the monitor initially to do greyscale in
  13. a couple days ago It dawned on me that i don't think I've ever seen someone build a Monochrome AND PowerPC mac classic. there are plenty of threads around dealing with color classics, which, honestly, don't look all that great at 640x480. Parts used in the build: Mac Classic - completely gutted and retrobrighted.   14. Hello all, long time lurker, first time poster. Like many of you, Ive been trying out the super-cheap radius pivot color card in my SE/30. Ive ordered a TwinSpark card, but who knows when/if it'll arrive. besides, i'm pretty sure it STILL wont fit. so what to do? My solution might not be the most "proper" out there, but it'll get the case back on. Here are the Digikey parts you'll need: 1x A32826-ND 1x A1289-ND 3x 1528-1379-ND Assembly is simple, and tedious. you'll need to push each plug with a pick to ensure tight contact....
