  1. I have a Hard Disk 20SC external SCSI drive enclosure that has a SCSI ID selector switch on back. Because I am using a non-stock IBM DGHS 4.5GB drive inside, I've left the SCSI ID select switch cable disconnected. But I am eager to change the SCSI ID on the fly. Here's a photo of the drive label, showing the SCSI ID jumper settings: I believe the precise jumper settings follow what is shown on page 17 of this PDF. And here's a photo of the inside of my HD20SC (a still image from my PSU recapping video): It seems that an ST-225N was the stock drive and its SCSI ID jumpers seem to correspond to that blue connector in my above photo: What I am curious about is how the HD20SC's SCSI ID selector cable works. I haven't yet torn apart my HD20SC to figure it out myself. I will do that, but I wanted to post here first. The above ST-225N diagram shows 4 pairs of pins that can be shorted to select SCSI ID, but the drive enclosure's blue connector only has a 6-wire cable, meaning it could only control 3 pairs, not 4. Any thoughts?
  2. I am currently editing a forthcoming video on the Apple Hard Disk 20SC. The SCSI drive mechanism I use with my 20SC enclosure is not stock, so I am curious about the sound of the stock drives. Would any of you 20SC owners who still have the stock 5.25" Seagate ST-225N drive (photo below) be willing to record the sound of the drive spinning up and running for several seconds? PC versions in an old PC should sound the same, so you could record that audio, I suppose. Photo Source You do NOT need to open the HD20SC to record the audio. If you do kindly record the audio, I would appreciate your permission to use that audio in my video, and I will credit you and your website in the text description. (You PM that info to me). You could just just sit an iPhone on a soft cloth (so the mic doesn't pick up table vibrations), with the mic aimed toward the drive (away from the fan vent) and then record a WAV or AIFF file. ALSO, if any of you have the slightly newer 3.5" Full Height Miniscribe 8425SA drive mechanism inside your 20SC enclosure, I would love to have 2 things: (1) a clear-focused, semi top-down photo of the drive mounted inside the 20SC case and (2) an audio recording of it spinning up and running for a few seconds. To see the Miniscribe drive I am talking about, just Google "miniscribe 8425SA" and click on "Images" to see some photos of the bare drive. The focus of my video is not on the stock drives, but I thought that adding a short few seconds of info on those original drives might add something nice.
  3. Just uploaded my Apple Hard Disk 20SC recapping video, which also covers the 40SC, 80SC and 160SC since they all use the same SONY CR-43 PSU. Check the text description for a Mouser Cart and useful info. At the end, I do a boot test with a 2015 15" MBP.
  4. I'm in the planning process to recap the SONY PSU housed inside my Apple HD20SC external hard drive enclosure. (I might make a video.) I've got a Mouser cart filled with mostly Organic Polymer Aluminum Electrolytic capacitors for that PSU (see below), which have very low ESR down to between 12mΩ and 43mΩ. There are many benefits to low ESR capacitors, and the life rating on them is very high compared to regular aluminum electrolytics. But my concern is that the output of some switch-mode (switching) power supplies can ring if the ESR of the output capacitance is too low (as per the data sheets of many switch mode controllers), so do any of you have a schematic? If not, have any of you used a large number of Organic Polymer capacitors in your vintage Mac PSU recap jobs with success? (I'm asking about power supplies here. Non-PSU applications don't matter much. Mostly those cases are a decoupling/bypass caps which hold up the voltage in times of voltage dips, and those caps benefit from very low ESR.)
