is there software to run text thru to get the spelling like that? it seems like more trouble than typing correctly!

Sort of. Originally, "leet speak" was intended to be used on bulletin boards and in IRC chat where bots patrolled the text looking for people illegally trading software. Since the bots can't comprehend the disguised text, it became an "elite" way for warez traders and crackers to exhange info.

Unfortunately, it has since become mainstream and is now just another silly way to appear "in the know". The Jeff K site is obviously a joke, but there are plenty of people out there who aren't far from it.

I know there was once a small app that would convert a text file to different dialects (Actually, I think it was called something like that) such as Pig Latin, Elmer Fudd, Ha><or, etc.
