Have come into a WGS 95 w/ the Server PDS card [populated w. 512k cache memory]. At bootup under 8.1, all seems to go fine up to the point where the blue progress bar is roughly 10% into the process when the boot process stops. This happens whether the drives are connected to channel A or B. The system doesn't freeze [mouse still moves] but won't continue the boot process.

Does this rings any bells out there?

Also, is there a link somewhere to any sort of manual for the WGS 95?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Definitely sounds like an extention conflict. Try holding down the shift key to start with extentions off. If you get to the desktop, go into the control panel and find extention manager and try OS 8.1 base, then reboot. If that's OK, then go back into extention manager and add things you need and keep rebooting until you have a compromise between what you need and what it'll boot with.

The manuals are around here somewhere...I think FireWire knows where...I forgot!

Thanks for the tip but no joy. What I failed to mention in the initial post is that the system boots and runs great when the drives are connected to the on-board SCSI port; my gut reaction is that the PDS card is toast or possibly some of the cache memory is flaky but I'm not certain about the latter.

The search goes on...

check into drivers that may be necessary to utilize it?

Aha! As I understand it, the WGS 95 was never intended to run MacOs, just A/UX. The below sheds the light I needed:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=19901

TOPIC
Installing System 7.5 onto an Apple Workgroup Server (AWS) 95 works without problem but after installing the update 2.0, it hangs during the initial boot sequence

DISCUSSION
This appears to be caused by the presence of the Processor Direct Slot (PDS) card. The Apple PDS card included with the AWS 95 is only intended to be used with the Apple Workgroup Server 95 and Under the A/UX operating system shipped with it.

This card was never tested under any other system software and none of the available versions of the Macintosh System software available now or in the future include drivers to support this card.

Now to find A/UX.

Thanks for the tip and welcome guys.

Ahhh, I completely forgot. You're right- the special WGS 95 PDS card only works with A/UX. Sorry I didn't realize that earlier.

You can get A/UX in lots of places, though, I can't remember if it's on our Hotline Server, but I know it's out there on many of them!

retromac68k.dyndns.org (login: retro / password: retro) on Hotline has everything you need to install and run A/UX.
