Hi everyone-- I have a lot of questions about the Newton, and figured the Newton forum is the right place to post them.1. What is the best place to buy a used Newton 2. What is the minimal Mac setup you need to sync it 3. Can you download software directly to it off the web if you have the Newton Modem 4. Are there any good Newton sites for software / other stuff Thanks for any help, icebook1 |

In order:1. If you want a 130, go to shrevesystems.com the Newton 130 is $105, but are prone to little problems (like the backlight being funky/broken) If a 2100 is more your style, for $150 you can get ones with RAVING ratings, go to maccables.com I just bought mine from there, and am waiting for it to get to my home, since my 130 from Shreve was stolen. 2) a 68030 and system 7.1 I beleive 3) don;t think so 4) www.unna.org ~Marchie ~Chaplain Marchie Holder of the Compact Mac - -Stick of Justice, with Explodeing CRT head -Wand of Power with Shocking Flyback Transformer Tip ~~"We are all Mad here"~~ |

Yeah, what he said. If you want to bother navigating through their site, Tucows do have Newton share/free-ware.~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit 68k Macintosh Liberation Army 00014 Macs liberated. |

Ok, The Newton 2100 is AWESOME! I HIGHLY Reccomend maccables.comThe Newton looks almost brand new. I don't have a dongle tho, so I can;t connect to my computers yet, which is cramping my use of it. If anyone has an extra, I sure could use it. I'm buying a dongle killer board from PCBman which is installed intoernal to the newt and gives a serial port to it instead of useing the dongle, but I'm sure it'll be a few weeks before I have that. ~Marchie ~Chaplain Marchie Holder of the Compact Mac - -Stick of Justice, with Explodeing CRT head -Wand of Power with Shocking Flyback Transformer Tip ~~"We are all Mad here"~~ |

Cool, I never knew that they made anything like that... is it like a hack, or more 'legit'? ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit 00014 Macs liberated |

Well, it's not an Apple approved process if that's what you're asking. If you look at the top of a Newton 2x00 where the power and interconnect ports are, you'll see a little blank plate. PCBman developed boards that fit inside the newt, and fill the hole where that plate is with a serial port. The Interconnect port isn't built as strong as it should be, and can eventually cave in. If you use a Dongle, you should file the little bumps on the top if the plug down, so there is less stress on the port when you take it in and out. Also, The 2x00 seris of Newtons can address 2 serial ports, and Audio line In/Out. I'm trying to get my hands on a couple Interconnect port plugs, and make a Super Dongle that has 2 serial ports, and Audio ports. I'll also build in a port for the Apple PlainTalk microphone (the IC port can supply 5v of Power, enough to run Apple's powerd mic) ~Marchie ~Chaplain Marchie Holder of the Compact Mac - -Stick of Justice, with Explodeing CRT head -Wand of Power with Shocking Flyback Transformer Tip ~~"We are all Mad here"~~ |

If you need newton software (and a lot of other 68k software for that matter) see if you can find a copy of BBS in a box, it has thousands of Stuffit files of mac/newton software. There is more software on those disks than you can shake a stick at. I have a copy of them, and as soon as I get a/ux working on my quadra, I will put the newton software up on an ftp server, if you cannot find the disks (any help with a/ux would be appreciated ) CCC
