i found this link on fritter, looks interesting:http://macfaq.org/serial.html The serial # from the "prototype" 128k (HoaxMac is my pet name for it) that was auctioned on eBay recently returned this info: Your Mac 128 (M0001), with serial number F4128D3M0001, was the 10839th manufactured during the 12th week of 1984 in Fremont, CA. HoaxMac link for the curious: http://cgi.ebay.ca/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1328274474 jt:linkasaurus-absurdicus Edited by - trash80toG-4 on 26 Mar 2002 07:49:13 |

I've got to try that on my 68k's...I love finding out when something was built! I did the same for my old '89 Volkswagen Cabriolet. 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 Regular Disappear! |

Didn't work on my 475.

This is a work in progress, but mostly finished. It works - or should, anyway - for all Mac Plus and earlier serial numbers.
that's why i posted it here, i assume they are progressing!jt Edited by - trash80toG-4 on 26 Mar 2002 10:47:16 |

depends on how cryptic apple tried to be, the sig's for collectable cameras, cars, and trucks have compiled decoders and tables from data snippets from the pre-mainframe era! i wouldn't hold my breath, but i woundn't bet against it at all, no matter the odds.jt

I uploaded a similar program called "Mac Envy" onto the HL server...it is circa 1992 so it doesn't handle PPCs well, especially "new world" machines...-------------------- keeper of the website and beholder of the Quadra/Centris Stick of Justice™ -------------------- Edited by - FireWire is fast on 26 Mar 2002 21:49:59 |

WOW!!!! I can't believe this AMAZING find! The PROTOTYPE Mac was NOT what the SELLER said it WOULD BE! And WE have CONCLUSIVE PROOF of that FACT!

i don't think so marchie, take another look at that copy, it's really well crafted! i don't think anything misrepresentative was ACTUALLY said. it takes a sharp critter to be that misleading without crossing the line between creative writing and out and out fraud! that's one of the things that kept me on the trail of the trickery that gets the finder to poll a meg of RAM on a system with 512k!jt™

yeah, but this clown managed to avoid being fraudulent and get a good feedback response from the buyer. i don't know ANYTHING about eBay, but i noticed that these two had more than one deal that day and wondered if they were in cahoots somehow? jt™

Most PPCs will show us as having a 68020 as a secondary processor, this is (I assume) the 68k emulator.~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit 68k Macintosh Liberation Army 00014 Macs liberated. |

The major problem is transferring that to the front of the machine, you have to find an archaic pen and write it down on a dead tree...At least I have a MessagePad! ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit 00014 Macs liberated |

The serial decoder was written to decode the serials on the first 128k and 512k Macs, I think pickle expanded it to cover the Plus as well but it doesn't go any further than that at the moment.-- Mark Benson Visit FlatPackMacs Online <http://fpm.gotdns.com> |

The website said that my Mac SE was built in Fremont, CA in 1988! and my LC was an unknown model but was built in 1991 in some unknown location.
