hehe! yes, believe it or not, I want 8.1 install help. I'm trying this out on my Centris. Warning: I don't want your opinion whether this is good or not. I just want help with the installation. Okay, so I have the 8.1 Full Installer. I currently have System 7.5.5 Updated installed. What do i do next? What do i do once I've installed 8.1? Like, booting and stuff?

Thanks!

Okay, you can't "update" from 7.x to 8.x, so you'll have to boot from another source (hard drive, CD, etc.) and clear out the 7.5.5 system folder, then mount the 8.1 installer and run it. That's it!

I really don't know what more detail to give? Just boot up from a different drive than the one you want to install it on, run the installer, leave the default install set in place and go.

Couple things: You may want to boot up with extentions off when you install it, and you also may want to do a clean HFS format of the drive you'll be installing it on using apple Drive Setup. If it's been formatted using another utility, or if you're not sure, it might try to update the Apple-proprietary disk driver and have issues. However, neither are mandatory, just ideal.

A theoretical question:

can I boot up from a 7.5.5 boot disk, when I have 7.6 installed on the hD? And then nistall 8.1 from the HD itself?

Let me understand- you want to boot from a floppy disk that has 7.5.5 on it, then replace the 7.6 system folder on the hard drive with 8.1, right? Yes, this will work.

I'm assuming that the installer is on the drive, so you won't be able to do a clean format. Instead, just drag the 7.6 system folder to the trash, then run the 8.1 installer and point it at the hard drive (not that you should have any other option). Restart, eject the disk, and it should work.

Hey- your Centris is an '040, right?

Pay attention, boyo! You don't want your ADB cable comeing out in the middle of an important system install, particularly if you have already deleted the system off the internal hard drive first! Untold damages and world wars could result!

Sheesh! No, formatting is not handled by the installer. Make sure you format it as HFS beforehand!
