Setup:

Quadra 950
400MB HD
40MB RAM
External SCSI HD, ID 3 (standard for internal CD's)

This is crazy! But then, making floppies in OS X sucks.

I make a boot floppy, but it won;t work...

I can't boot off a CD... ARGH!

According to the compatibility list I posted in the Lounge, the 950 is supported by A/UX 3.0.
You could also try installing it on one of your Mac II's (or did you sell them already?).

Yes, I think I'll have to NOT use OS X to make the disk.. it's screwing them up for use with older macs.

USB floppy drives work fine in OS X thank you. :-)

What it does:

I put in disk@blinking Question Disk...

Happy Mac is shown

Floppy is ejected and it STAYS at the Happy Mac, dead.

Well, here'sw how it's going:

After reviewing the A/UX FAQ, I found that amoung other things, the CD ROM drive I was useing isn't supported, so I now am useing an Apple CD300 external, which will work for installation at least.

But the problem I'm having is it still won't boot off the floppy!

I've made 2, and neither will be accepted.

Is there a trick to making them?

I made mine on a 6300 with disk copy - no OSX floppy drive here to even try doing it that way... Although the way you said it was rejected is a little odd - with the happy mac appearing, then the floppy ejecting - sounds like the 950 could be acting a bit odd there...

<wild guess mode>
if you see a happy mac does that mean mac os floppy?
if so, i don't see a system spec.
could it be looking for an enabler it's not finding?

I'm pretty sure there's a dodgy copy of the A/UX installation floppy image floating around.

I'd been banging my head against the wall for about a week with a similar problem... D/Led a fresh copy of the floppy ...and everything was.... boppy?

The disk image I used that worked was obtained from the retromac68k.dyndns.org hotline server.

Good luck!

What does it take to get on that site? I've been trying for months, but I always get a "connection Failure" in IE 5.

Heh,

well, for a start, its a hotline server, not a website, so you could start by going to versiontracker and D/L the hotline client.

Cheers!

No, www.versiontracker.com, not visiontracker. I recommend searching for Frogblast if you have OS X.

I don't have X yet. Can't justify the spending of 130 bucks for something that I have no real use for yet.

I should have been able to read version tracker, seeing as i picked up "how to read for dummies," but I couldn't read it.... hmm.... something of a problem there.

Anyway, what should I pickup for classic?

Sigh.

Maybe we need an FAQ to cover stuff like this.

www.versiontracker.com is many a mac user's first stop for the latest software releases and updates. A good site to bookmark.

Cheers!

Well, honestly, I thought Hotline died years and years and years ago. I figure that since things have evolved so much, it would have dissapeared. I've never used it, but it was on our 286 machine back in the '80s.

Heck, and I always thought that Hotline was a 'modern' program.

Actually it is. Fairly. It was originally created in 1996 by Adam Hinkley, a young dude from Melbourne. His trials and tribulations at the hands of unscrupulous north american lawyers make for interesting reading, and hopefully are a wake-up for anyone with a bright idea but a naive view of human nature.

Some vague memories from the BBS days (back before I got started on the net in 1989...prolly just before, in 1988 or so) tell me that hotline was a dialup-bbs related thing for PC's. either the BBS software itself, or a terminal prog for using them.

Well now... that goes into another of my interests, being palaeontology... and yes :). we did. and a seven-foot-tall wombat type, a Diprotodon.

I don't know if you guys have something similar in build, but a wombat is say, 2-3 feet long, a foot high or more, about the same width... and looks like a large, fat rat. Lookss kinda cuddly really, but they are the most insanely brick-solid-animal I've ever touched. You probably wouldn't find a tortoise any harder to feel - alllll bone n muscle. Thats part of the digging thing I guess :). Anyhows, they can cause enormous damage to semi-trailers if they're hit at speed on the road, and will almost certainly write off the underside of a car when hit - which happened to my sis's mother in law. Anyhows, with an idea of how solid they are, being that little...

...imagine one 7 feet tall and 12 long. whoa. a living bulldozer. I don't think it'd care much where it pointed itself, not like anything would stand in its way.

So yeah. I'll bee a one of them. :D.

More powerful over the human (or rabbits) need to PLAY... maybe.

But Ii'd like to see the Newton OS serve e-mail lists and have 20 people playing NetHack on it at the same time.

Well....

Now that I'm back home, I'm trying again.

NEW SETUP:
The CD ROM is an external Apple CD 300

New Floppy made from same image, but that image will boot the CD!

But the Install window that pops up after startup, says

...
"
Open on '(4,0,6)/unix' failed
Autorecovery failed.
chrootr
chroot failed

installer#
"

so.. umm... what's going on?

I have been having the exact same problem on a Quadra 800. I used th Man command on my MacOS X imac and found out that chroot has something to do with Root access. It is in real technical terms. Could someone please help by putting a cd image on http. Because the one I found on the ftp mentioned in one of the threads I think (or believe) is the problem. It also could be the HD???
