What practical use can I make of the nubus slots on my quadra 840av?

You can user them to expand and beef up your Quadra.

Here's a list of what I have in my own Quadra 840av:

Nubus slot 1. SuperMac SpigotPower AV card (just installed it today!) - This adds hardware acceleration to the existing video capture capabiliies and allows you to capture 640x480 video at 30fps instead of 5fps.

Nubsu slot 2. FWB JackHammer card- This adds the fastest possible SCSI disk performance available to 68k macs. Using the 68-pin, Ultra-2 Wide connectors along with a striped (level zero) RAID array, you can max out at a 20MB/sec transfer rate.

Nubus slot 3. Radius PrecisionColor 24Xk card - This card puts out 24-bit color all the way up to 1152x978, and is faster doing so than most other Nubus video cards.

What else can you use them for?

Radius Rockets - Secondary processors that can run tasks in the background.

PhotoBoosters - Photoshop accelerators for speeding up rendering.

Ethernet Cards - You already have on-board ethernet, so unless oyu get a hold of a 10/100 ethernet nubus card and have a 100mbps capable network, don't bother.

Of course there's more, but that's all I can think of right now that would be specifically useful in an 840av.

i tend to doubt that the those last two radius products would work correctly in an AV box. they might, but i know Rockets top out at a basic 7.1 install and would wreak havoc with the audio anyway.

one more standard SCSI controller would probably be a better use of a slot for scanners, ROMs, ZIPs and other slow i/o.

I agree, I personally would never use either on an 840av, but I figured I'd mention them before somebody else did!

Nubus video cards will allow you to run up to 4 screens, if you set up at least three you can run Hornet in Panorama Mode, that's what I'm doing with my 950... Just got another video card last night!

I've put my Portrait Display and 2 Page display on my 8100, and let me tell you, it's a BEAST! Pagemaker heaven...

You're limited to 4 monitors on the 840AV... unless you get a twin head NuBus card or an expansion chassis, that is!

oooooh, ok. for a minute I thought you were suggesting there was a NuBus limitation of 4 heads. Ok.. so my idea of making a 6 headed Mac II is still viable...

i don't recall seeing a dual-head NuBus card, but it's hard to imagine that none are available, considering the dearth of available slots on the ci which was a real workhorse for the longest time. you should really look closely at the monitor info on LEM, speed hits from video cards are a lot more common and complicated than i had ever imagined, and that's going a ways!
