So I wuz staggering to catch a cab home after a hard day's sailing (and the compulsory after-race revel) when I saw a PC dumped on the roadside. Double take... That ain't no PC! its a Quadra 700 complete w/ apple 14" colour monitor. Chucked it in the cab, rushed home, booted... no worries! 20 meg RAM, 350 meg HDD, looks like it just came outta the showroom. What is wrong with some people?

Another sad case of someone pinching the good stuff tho... both the little covers on the back are missing, but no compensatory kick-ass nubus cards inside. 6 empty VRAM slots too. Oh well, can't win 'em all!

Its running 7.1... amazing, boots in 15 sec from power-up. So much for progress!

Anyone know of a website with pullapart instructions for this baby?

CC

PS. Just picked up a 12.1 wallstreet for US$300 on e-bay too... if anyone's interested.... Thought not.

Current score:

1 Apple //e
1 PB 520c
1 Quadra 700
1 Quadra 800 (recently resurrected!)
2 Powermac 6100s
1 Wallstreet 233

Umm...if you want the *cough* SERVICE MANUAL *cough* for the Quadra 700, which has a detailed Take-Apart section for the machine, email me. I'll send it to you.

You get big points for that rescue!
You get some taken away for mistaking a beautiful work of Mac for a PC.

On the whole... good deal!

Tis all simple with the 700 - until it comes to getting the psu/drive bays out. that's all just so unintuitive... of course it's the insides so it's forgivable for apple to have made it a leeeetle painful. The 'tube' down the center of the case (attached to the drive bay) may have a screw in the middle. Undo that and then 'unclip' the tube from the power supply and out pops the psu, and the drive bay near falls out from there on!.

Why have him go through that when he could just mozy on down to our Hotline server and download it! I didn't upload all of the Quadra/Centris (and PowerBook/Duo and Macintosh II for that matter...) service manuals for nothing (I know, I know, double negative...)

Aha! Someone peering over my shoulder at the auction.

If ya do need some, lets arrange something behind the scenes rather than bid against each other.

...It's more a case of want than need, but if you need them then you can have them.

Great find! The Quadra 600/IIci is actually ridiculously easy to open up and prod around in. Well, except for that awful drive shelf...I hate that thing.

Oh, and uh....

6 empty VRAM slots too.

...the Quadra 700 doesn't have any VRAM slots. It uses the first 1MB of RAM for video memory, unless you use a Nubus video card.

Got to correct you on that one. It has 512K of dedicated VRAM on the motherboard, and six (preferrably occupied ) slots. It maxes out at 2 MB, which gives 24 bit colour in 832x624.

The IIsi is the (only?) Mac that uses main RAM for video.

Damn, I forgot...I was thinking of the IIci and because the IIci and the Q700 are so similar, I forgot that it had VRAM slots added to its Mobo. The IIci, the Iisi and actually alot of other '030 and older macs use RAM for video.
