How much RAM is required? And is this a stable OS or should it be upgraded to 9.2.2?

I don't know the exact requirements, but I wouldn't run it at less than 32MB. It's fairly stable, as long as you're swift with extension manager. 9.2.2 is equally stable, but only runs on NWR (beige G3 or newer) macs.

I wouldn't reccomend anything under 128mb for 9...but then again that's just me...

On the other hand, if I remove unnecessary extensions, it should run fine with 96 MB, eh?

96MB would be OK. I've never actually run it at less than 112MB, and I would suggest you use virtual memory to reduce OS 9's memory allocation and avoid any audio/video apps. Otherwise, you should be fine.

In my experiences, its okay if you have 32 megs of ram, but you wouldn't want to be running any more than two apps at the same time. And those 2 apps are basically an MP3 player, and a web browser, or AppleWorks., or a little shareware game.

Under 96 megs of ram, however, its a lot better, and you can run 5 applications at once. The good thing is though, is that my iMac has a 40 gig drive, which allows me to have VM cranked up to 1 gig, so you often see my appswitcher on my iMac going halfway down the screen. Life is good when you have your equal fix of both G3s and 68ks.

don't feel bad cinemo, my only G3 is on the Sonnet Card in my PCI Q630,
and i don't have the PURE Quadra power that you do, but then I do have the G4 to fall back on for consolation I guess.
