If I was to get the altra rare SIMM doublers and shove 4 64Mbs 72pin sticks in a 610 would it work? iWas thinking there would be a firmware issue but I am not sure. ???

Not firmware, but RAM controller.
And according to LEM's 64 MB 72-pin SIMM tests on 68Ks, the highest MB you can have in one RAM slot thingy is 32mb...
don't know if those SIMM doubler thingies you speak of would work...

i kinda doubt it would make any difference
<guesswork> the LEM info makes me think that it's a limitation in the number of address line traces connected to the simm slots on any given bank of memory. disabling mobo memory and jumpering the address lines for that banks memory space might work if a single 72 PIN slot can actually address two banks of memeory simultaneously and has all the necessary data lines implemented or if the whole thing can be multiplexed correctly. </guesswork>
but i really don't know enough to call it an informed guess. jt
