The first thing to remember in understanding the infamy of the 190 is that it is, in essence, a 5300 with a 68k motherboard.

That means that the early ones were prone to all/most of the QC problems which plagued the 5300 including problems with the plastics, etc.

That said, I would inagine that one which has been through the REA would be pretty nice.

i'm gutting a 190cs parts machine from eBay, i never got to squish the L in the CD before! does anybody know the voltage for the backlighting tube? i've got a lot of parts to swap for a dead device or shell for the drive bay. Lotsa daughtercards too. i was suprised to find a PC card slot in a 68k, are there any wireless network pc card adapters that work in a 190?

will a thinner piece of glass work for the backlighting? this thing is well on its way to becomin the first MacAntFarm! (i hope it's the first anyway!)

If anybody's interested, there's a guy in my area selling a 190cs for $50. He doesn't think it works (seems like just a dead PRAM battery), so I might even be able to talk him down lower.

I'd be careful, cinemafia, that $50 190cs might have bigger problems. I have a 190cs (with a dead PRAM battery) and it boots just fine (but it resets the date to 2006 if you've pulled the main battery!!!). If you can, try hitting the little recessed reset button on the back (under the port hatch and below the aperture for the optional external video port). If that does not enable the machine to boot, then caveat emptor (or knock down the price).

TRash, I too have wondered if a wireless card might work in the 190cs. Apple might not support Airport for 68k, but I wonder if an Orinoco card might work (they claim to have drivers for OS 7.5.2).

BTW, since you've been to the mobo of the 190cs and presumably lived to tell about it, is the 68LC040 socketed in a 190cs. I'm hoping to upgrade to a REAL 68040. (Of course if it is not possible to add an 040 to the 190cs, I guess I'll just wait til a 550c shows up at a garage sale, and wait, and wait, and wait,....)

Well, yeah, I was going to see if anybody else might want it. Nevermind.

looks lik you'll be waiting, it's soldered. are any PB CPU's socketed at all?

that Orinoco card looks interesting! i've been kicking around the ideal of a Duo PC Card hack with a couple of the guys at fritter, and 7.5.2 support sounds very promising. it's a question of whether a SCSI or IDE to PC Card bridge will handle the connection or not, thanks for the lead!

AFAIK, they're soldered on. They're soldered on in the '030 PowerBooks, and in the 190 series. I'm not sure about the 5xx...i've never cracked the case on one.

Ohhh QUADRAuple poopies!!! But at least you spared me the hardship, possible powerbook death, and ultimate disappointment if I had tried to delve into the mobo of my 190. I definitely appreciate how informed and informative everyone is here at the 68kMLA.

Maclover5, I'm sure you're probably right about soldered CPUs in Apple Powerbooks (sockets just extra add weight). However, the Outbound 2030E has a socketed 68EC030 on a small easily removable board (Thanx Outbound!). I'm thinking of hacking my Outbound Notebook to higher speeds (but that'll be a subject of another posting).

The Powerbook 540 at least uses a CPU daughter card there's even a PPC upgrade for it which takes to to 183 Mhz!! Which sounds awfully like a PB 1400 upgrade. Does anyone know if they are interchangeable? Somehow I doubt it but it would be cool as there are plenty of 1400 daughter cards kicking around.
