My Palm IIIxe's screen cracked recently, and I am considering replacing it with a Newton instead of replacing the screen, but only if it can completely replace my Palm. This means that the Newton platform must have:
- A French-English Dictionary
- All five Hitchiker's Guide books available on ebook
- Both Dirk Gently books on ebook
- Spellchecking software or an English dictionary
- A browser that would let me view web pages downloaded by my computer (something similar to Avantgo for Palms)
All of these have to be freely available, as I never had to pay for Palm software.

well, all those EXIST.

First, you need at LEAST a MessagePad 130, and I would SERIOUSLY suggest a 2000 or 2100. The webpage browsing part will not be as nice on the 130, and honestly is a pain to set up. I've been trying. I beleive there is free webpage viewing software, but the suite that is usually touted as the BST in Newton web browsing is NewtScape, which is shareware and well worth the $20 or so. It's time-limited

Second, The books you ask for I have not specifically seen, but I was planning on creating the hhgg books for my Newt anyways, so they will be available soon.

Third, the French-English dictionary is available at www.unna.org as is most of the other software you require.

Lastly, spell check is built into the 2x00 Newts, and third party ones are available for lesser Newts, and in addition or extension of the built in on the 2x00.

Personally, I use AvailWorks, which is a FULL featured word processor, on my MessagePad 130. Spellcheck is built in to it. It's a commercial peice of software, worth the $30.

I would suggest getting a Newton Keyboard as well as the Newt itself.

you guys are beginning to convert me into a newton person. when they first came out, i had so much fun needling an insufferably pompous "CONSULTANT!" type about his digital suppository that i don't think i ever really took newtons seriously. if the bug starts biting hard, what do the high end newtons the keyboards and accessories cost?

was a floppy drive ever available or has anybody ever hacked a floppy onto the newton? i always thought it would be fun to try to use one of the old serial interfaced tandy portable fdd's.

Well, as far as I know, the newton 130's run right around 100 - 150 dollars on ebay right now. The 2000 and the 2100 run anywhere between 180 (really cheap)- 310 (real expesive). Apple never (to my knowledge) released a floppy drive for the Newton... I could be wrong however.

I looked up Newtons on ebay and I found a nice 2100 going for about $100 and a 130 going for $50 (both had cases, but neither had keyboards).
In the Palm section, I found many factory-sealed [new] 8+ MB Palms going for less than $100 (like a Clie for $92, a 105 for $65, etc.).
Tough choice....

Yeah... but if you want to synch you PDA (which ever you choose) to an older mac, then it would be ( in my opinion ) easyer with a Newton. Man... I should check Newton prices more often. But anyway the decision is yours to make.
