A friend recently bought a PB 180. He wanted to use it to get online. It has Sys 7.1. He asked me to help him out. My experience with Macs is extensive, BUT I've never tried to use a 68k Mac online. Anyway, I looked for PPP, but couldn't find it. I re-installed Sys 7.1 thinking maybe it got trashed, but the fresh install didn't have it either. Anyone know how to get online with a PB 180, internal modem, and Sys 7.1?

If I remember correctly, the PPP Dial-up software is located in the CD Extras folder for System 7.5 and System 7.1 Performa Editions.

I'm the one with the original question. Here's a followup report.

After checking the link that didn't give me an immediate solution but eventually pointed me toward FreePPP. But after installing it it said I needed Open Transport. So then I started looking on old System CDs and MacAddict CDs until I finally found Open Transport and PPP on one of them.

Now, as you know, the PB 180 doesn't have a CD drive. So I hooked it up to my Performa 575 via localtalk and transfered the software. Then I hooked up an old 33.6 SupraExpress Modem to the PB 180 and after entering all the right numbers in TCP/IP and PPP it connected. Now here is the kicker. It connected at 28800! That surprised me because my iMac with built-in 56k modem never connects faster than 26400! Anybody have a clue what is going on?

This little PB 180 is so cool. I'm not going to want to give it back to my friend.

we need more follow up reports like this, nice to hear from you! good job on the workarounds & fix, btw.

if you are using america offline, the splash screen/connection speed at log on is probably wrong and aol is lying in both cases. what isp are you using and what is the source and reliability of the connection speed data?
