The best newton every (and the best PDA) was the MP2100.
You can find info for the lightest/slimmest here:

The smallest Newton was the OMP (Original MessagePad) and the MP 100. Although these are the smallest I would not recomend getting one. If you want to get a Newton , stick with a model that comes with OS 2.0 or higher such as a MP 120 (watch out some of them have OS 1.3) , MP 130 , MP 2000 or MP 2100. OS 2.X will give you a much broader range of Apps to pick from and far better Hand Writing Recognition. All of the other models are a little bit bigger than the OMP and the MP 100 but they are far more functional. The MP 2XXX models are a little bit bigger than the MP 1XX models but not by much. In other words if you have the cash buy a MP 2XXX model.

I'd suggest a MP2x00, too. They are by far the best. The MP120 ans 130 with OS 2.0 have excellent handwriting recognition, and are just very good. If you get a 120 with OS 1.3 you can upgrade it to OS 2.0 with a ROM chip.
