Ok, not a Beowulf cluster...

not a UNIX cluster...

but 5 Macs, connected by nothing but serial cables to each other, and serving as network servers ala DNS, HTTP, Gopher, etc.

Please tell me I'm not the only one that's doing something this crazy.

Popular? A hit of scarcasm?

If it indeed is popular...perhaps I should put a hit counter on there? (I didn't think anybody goes there)

It will be popular in the future, when we get some more content!

That actually sounds pretty sane. Depending on which models your using (se/30s with 128MB RAM each running system 7.6?) that would be pretty functional, if we could just find a way to shut off those energy sucking CRTs and turn off those annoying fans, we'd have nice, quiet, good looking compact mac servers, use them as heaters... hehehe

i also have my macs connected in that fashion but i read somewhere that if there was a power surge, it would fry everything. Even if u had all but one of the macs on a surge protector. It is also a lot slower than the regular Apple Talk thingys with the phone line i think.

I'm quite surprised that it took this long for someone to register the name "FlyingToasters".

Here's a project for everyone:

HOW do you set it up via serial cables? What protocols? What services do you put on each system?

It's been a LONG time since I did anything like this, and then I was only useing 2 computers. It should be possible. I used to use the 'Net, pre WWW, connecting via SLIP, Telnet, FTP, Gopher and the like, and that was all serial based.

I'll make it more interesting yet... System 7.1 is the highest you can use.

Work those brain muscles!

That would probally be the cheapest way but at leased one would need to have ethernet to get a high speed connection to the internet.
