I picked up a 33.6 modem for my Quadra 650 the other day and have been happily surfing since then. However, as not being a fan of Netscape, does anybody know where I would be able to find the last version of Internet Explorer and that is 68k compatible? Also, was Outlook Express out back in the day of the 68k? If so i would like to get my hands on the last 68k version as well...

For a web browser, besides Netscape, you have 2 other alternitaves. Internet Explorer and iCab.

Internet Explorer 5.0 according to Microsoft will run on your Quadra.
OS 7.6.1 or later
* 8 MB or RAM with virtual Memory on
* 12 MB of available hard disk space for Internet Explorer
* QuickTime version 3.0 or later
* Open Transport 1.2 or later, for dial up connections
* OT PPP or similar PPP connection software (control panel) with PPP (extension)
* 9600-baud modem; 28.8 kbps or higher recommended
* Access to the Internet through an Internet service provider (ISP) or the network to which your computer is connected.

But from experience, I know that you really don't want to do that. IE 5 runs god awful slow, even on a Legacy PPC system like a first generation Power Mac.

You would probably be better off with Internet Explorer 3.0.1. It is much faster than 5 on a system like yours, so you will probably be better off. It is your decision on which way to go as far as IE.

Your other alternative is iCab for 68K. The link I found with information on it expired, so I don't have anywhere to get it from right now.

Download Internet Explorer 5
Download Internet Explorer 3.0.1

Now with the topic of E-mail. Without Netscape, you are in a very tight spot. Outlook Express (any version) requires Mac OS 8.1, and through my own experience, is slow as hell even on a 120Mhz Processor.

I recommend E(asy)-mail. It seems to be the best one available for System 7. It is freeware.

Download E(asy)-mail

The iCab home page is located at:
http://www.icab.de/
It will run on any system with an '020 or better, running Mac OS 7.0 or later.

If you want to do email on your Quadra your best bet would probably be Claris emailer. It runs great on older systems and is an incredibly awsome program. Claris emailer has a lot of die hard fans who still use it every day even on new systems. It's some what hard to find online since it was a commercial product that is now discontinued. I did find the full version of Claris email 1.x (I can't remember the exact version) on one of my MacWorlds from 2000.

Well I don't subscribe to MacWorld so if you wanted to help a fellow soldier out, I wouldn't mind if you emailed me the installer

If you change the clock before you install the demo to 2065 or somethin, then change it back, the demo won't expire until 2065!

If you have any of the old, first year MacAddict discs, i think they have 68k versions of IE, and also Mosaic, if you wanna use that.

I only started to subscribe to MacAddict in march of 2000 . It would be very interesting to see what Mosiac is like though, seeing as it was the basis for IE and Netscape.

Oh, ~Coxy, both of those links don't work...

Have you tried the top link? You'll have to do the date change trick, tho.

Hey, the Ethernet MicroDock for my Duo 280 finally arrived yesterday, YES!

Anyway, I downloaded the drivers from NewerTech's site on my 7500 and AppleTalked it over to the Duo and installed it. Then I restarted the Duo, plugged the ethernet cable from my cable modem in and saw the little green MicroDock LED light up! Then I set AppleTalk to ethernet and set TCP/IP to use DHCP. Then, I launch Netscape 2 and it freezes. Not the OS, but just NS, as if it's trying to detect the network connection and can't. So, I trash NS 2 and try NS 4.08, it does the same thing. I can force-quit out of either and the Finder is fine, but the browsers will not load at all.

Any suggestions? I was trying to d/l the 68k version of iCab but I couldn't get a hold of it. Could this be some issue with OS 8.1? I'm going to try it here t work as soon as I can figure out how to get the ethernet cabl;e out of this accursused Winbox. It's like they have it locked in there or something...

It's working it's working!!!

I got the ethernet cable out of the DowsBox and into my Duo and launched NS 4.08...and here I am! WOW! I almost can't believe that I'm surfing the web on a 7 year old laptop. It's actually fairly responsive, although the lack of an FPU and the meager 12 megs of available RAM are probably a bottleneck with graphics-heavy sites. But forums like here as well as LEM and the 68kMLA site are made in the shade.

Beautiful...just beautiful...hey if anybody knows where I can get the 68k iCab let me know, I want to see if it's faster than NS 4. I'm sure it uses less memory!

Damn...I'm back on the DowsBox.

I quit NS and shut down the Duo so that I could switch the ethernet MicroDock with my floppy MicroDock and upload some old 68k games and stuff I have on diskettes. Anyway, I try to reboot the Duo and it gets the happy mac, then flickers and gives the no-OS question mark.

I tried everything, but it won't boot. I have the OS 8 floppy with me but of course you can't boot a Duo from a floppy. Great...I get the thing online to make one post (well, two actually, I made one over at MAF) and suddenly the OS is hosed.

I'm going to have to wait until I get home, then use my MiniDrive (which has a backup of everything on the Duo) to reinstall. Maybe I should look for another browser, too. I can't see that anything other than NS caused the issue....

Well it was fun while it lasted!
