Finally starting to put my 840av to good use. Can anyone recommend a good freeware/shareware Drum Synthesizer and regular Synthesizer. I'm looking for something to make soundtracks with that will work on both the 840av and a Duo 2300 running OS 8.1.

Any help is appreciated.

Virtual Drummer is one of my favorite MIDI drum synths, however, it's PPC only and thus will only work on your 2300. I can upload it to the hotline server if you want it. I, too, am looking for a good 68k drum synth for my own 840av, and haven't found one yet. So, what I do is use Virtual Drummer on my 7500, work out all the patterns I want, then export the tracks to AIFF and bring them over to the 840av for tweaking in ProTools.

Maybe Cybersound VS could be useful.

CyberSound VS later became CyberSound Studio for ppc only.

There is a demo at

There is also the built-in synth sounds in quicktime that something like logic audio might be able to use.

There might be something at info-mac that can use the quicktime synth.

The quicktime synth sounds ok but for high quality synth sounds you need something more powerful than a 68040.

And there is also Timidity 68k that uses gravis ultrasound (gus) instrument samples.

The gravis ultrasound is an old PC sound card.

The gus samples can be downloaded free.

Timidity 68k is not realtime for 68k as far as I know but the instrument samples are better than the quicktime samples.

I've only used the Linux version.

The way to use it is by creating a midi file and then use Timidity to make a wav file from the midi file using the gus samples.

Timidity 68k is at http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~gb7t-ngm/timidity/archive.html

Thanks MarkyMark! Thanks to hand-me-downs, I now have the Yamaha speakers that were with my 7500 mated to my 840av, so audio is fun again!
