Right now, we have a bit of a problem (in my eyes) that needs to be addressed about standards on the website. For example.

~Coxy version: http://www.macaphernalia.8m.com/mac_iis.htm
FireWire is Fast version: http://homepage.mac.com/mla68k/iisi.html
Captain Z version: http://homepage.mac.com/captainz/68kmla/Powerbook520c/

As you can see, everyone has a different prefrence in style. This issue should probably be addressed before we have many submissions in for various 68K Macs.

Mine was just a bare-bones layout to distribut information.

Anyway, I like you layout, Captain Z. Should fit necely with the title page and all that.

Thanks. I seem to enjoy the windowized look of mine in a certain way.

Also, what has been decided on as the benchmarking software? Is it going to be Norton System Info or something like MacBench?

It's not that noone likes it, it just lacks... umm... color.

Your version would be a good version for the Black and White Text Only part of the website.

I like Firewire is fast's version because is simple (fast), functional and is also pleasant to the eye.

Where exactly can you get MacBench? Last I heard, it was discontinued and no longer available.

Uh, you mean windowized as in win-doze? It bears an awfully striking resemblance...Anyone see that or is it just me?

Not to disregard Captain Z's valiant effort, but it seems rather silly to waste time making 2 different version of the spec page for 1 computer. It makes more sense to use the one that would load the fastest (which, currently, is mine) Can we have a vote or something?

Will the amount of RAM in a Mac alter the benchmarks? If so, then we'd need to label them (ie: FireWire is fast's Quadra 650, ~Coxy's Quadra 650, etc).

Also, I am sure VRAM will alter the scores a little bit, so if we aren't going to go the way of everybody's own tricked out mac benchmark, it would be wise to test using the stock config.

Well, the main page of the site invites people to go to a text only version or a pics-galroe version...

Already did.

For those who want it, I have made it available on my iDisk.

I like the Captain Z version BUT....

I'd rather use FireWire's.

I'd say use a GREY background, not white, and black text.

Maybe I'll make my own version tonight, and show everyone.

I've decided to knucle down and contsruct some pages for the site.
I did some of the eraliest model macs.
Another thing we should do it to create a new thread for which models are done already, I'll set one up.

I'm wondering if asp really should be used for the forum...

It just seems to me like a _blatant_ endorsement for Microsoft Products.

I know there is a logistics problem-
We can't really do well using a 68k Mac for serving.

Well, we could potentially with MacPerl- but if this grows into a huge following, server performance could be a problem. At least for dynamically generated content (like a forum).

Perhaps a high end '040 could handle it.

On the *other* handle, using a 'nix server with php would _not_ be a blatant endorsement of Microsloth.

But it also wouldn't be exactly an endorsement of 68k Macs either.

If we aren't gonna use a 68k mac, though, *nix and apache/php would be better than IIS. (Yes, Linux and BSD both work on 68k macs, but they are really doggish on 68k macs)

I'm thinking, though, that a low end PCI PowerPC running Linux would be a good choice for a server.

phpbb is a nice (fairly clean) forum that could be used- I have it running at http://www.funkyres.com/forum/ (not very active yet) and MacAddicts own Captain Scott is doing quite a bit of interface work on it- making it more gorgeous.

I seem to remember seeing server rails available that would fit the beige G3 desktop. A beige G3 with Yellow Dog Linux (or even OS X) would be an excellent choice for a colocated server.

The obvious issues with this would be:

1) Beige G3 aren't yet under $10.00 at the local thrift store.
That would be a *one time* expense.
2) Colocation isn't free
That's the hard one.
3) Beige G3's only have 10mb NIC's
a 100baseT PCI card is cheap. And 10mb actually would probably be fine.

-=-
What I would recommend is this-

1) buy space on a linux server for now. One with MySQL and PHP.
That way, the forum can use MySQL which means if and when it goes to a Mac, moving the forum would be easy- you could first get everything set up on the the mac, dump the MySQL database for the forum, and then load it into the one running on a Mac.

2) If my business venture goes well, I will be colocating two linux boxes. One will be for my website, the other will be for redundancy- so that if the main one fails, the second one automagically will take over the IP address and start serving (It's called an HA Heartbeat Cluster- I've implemented it before, works really well).

When that time comes (I'm hoping by June) I would be very happy to set up a VirtualHost just for the 68k Liberation Army- and give shell access to the web design folks.

That would then eliminate hosting cost until the move to a Mac server is made.

When the move to a Mac server is made, I would not at all be surprised to see someone who is interested in 68k macs working for a business with a T1 that would be willing to let the Mac sit in the corner doing its thing. But we'll see.

-=-
Anyway, those are my thoughts.
Perhaps the MLA leaders should think about them.
Then, if it decided that that is a good move, a PayPal account could be set up for donations. And if the donations reach enough to pay for 3 months of web hosting, go for it!

Before I became a unix nut, I was a real 68k nut- I loved thelowendmac.org and was very active on the vintage-mac mailing list (my e-mail address was moonglue@141.com for those who have been on that list- I no longer am).

I see much more potential with this group.
We can really turn this into something.

It was during the 68k era that Apple really had their stuff together, the good old days, let them not be forgotten!

Good hardware and an excellent OS.
*still* good hardware. My SE/30's never crash!
Can't say the same for mom's Ruby DV+ iMac under OS 9...

Anyway, enough rambling...

The advantage right now is that this hosting is free.
