Checked out a garage sale on the w/end and found, strewn around the place a complete LC630 DOS compatible machine. Paid AUD$10 for the lot.The original specs: - Full 33Mhz '040, Cyrix 486-66 CPUs. - 40MB RAM Mac side, 8MB PC. - 500MB internal HD, original Apple external 350MB HD (the one with the sliding front SCSI ID panel) - Colour Plus monitor (blah - will turf this one) - Stylewriter 2500, bag of new cartridges - Caere SCSI hand scanner, Hayes Accura 28.8 modem (can you flash the BIOS on these to get 33.6K?) My hacks so far: - Upped RAM to 52MB on PC side, 32MB to PC - Internal HD to 3.2GB, 12X CD-ROM - The really cool bit: came by a Kingston Turbochip 586-133MHz CPU at a swap meet ($10), ripped out the Cyrix 486-66, whacked this in - it still works! - Overclocked 630 to 40Mhz, which in turn has upped the 586 to 160Mhz! The next really cool bit: I'll be able to play MP3's on the PC side, all the while doing things on the Mac! Ooh err.

NICE! What's that . . . about $5 in real money? It's interesting that it had a full 040 and was that a 486DX or SX? It always killed me that many of those machines were copro free on both sides. Nice job with the Overclocking and Kingston 586 hack, comrade! jt . Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF edit: Have you got the SoundBlaster daughtercard? IIRC, it had better sound output than the onboard hardware in those systems in reviews I read back in the day. Edited by - Trash80toG-4 on 27 Dec 2003 06:26:51 |

$7.40 in US money! And from all I've heard, the majority of LC630s here had full 68040s. Makes me wonder if we ever had a real labelled Quadra 630. Mine IDs itself as a Quadra 630, but the front label says LC630. I don't -think- I've seen a Q630 for sale on eBay oz, ever. Doesn't mean they're not out there, though. dana

Cheers Yep it's badged as an LC630, and I think the original 486 chip was an SX one. The only other LC630 I've used was my brother's work machine (6 years back!), and it had an LC040 CPU. Which makes me think this one has been upgraded. When overclocked, I still have to use the 'I Wish I Were' control panel to get Marathon to support hardware acceleration, albeit Mac OS installs fine without. Having a bit of trouble getting Win9x installed onto the PC side - it installs fine, then comes up with a DOS 'general protection fault' when booting. Hmm ... oh well, I only really need DOS anyhow Next job is to make my own PRAM battery using 3 x AA cells. PS. Trash80toG-4: Look out, our money is nearly 75% as good as your money! Oh, and going back to Gothikon's thread in the lounge, we now have lots of 32MB 72-pin SIMMS, along with a few 64MB ones as well. And yes, I've tried it in the 630, and get 132MB - but will use these sticks somewhere else! 52MB is plenty for such a machine. My other 'beast' is my LC475, full 040 @ 33MHz, 36MB RAM/1.2GB disk, ethernet - should work well with the 630 for a number of network games - any suggestions? Wow! I'm surprised the 64MB SIMMs worked as they were only single sided. For the DOS side did you use the PC card setup disks you can get from apple? They install a minimal version of DOS which should be good enough to get the windows 95 to start installing. -------- Apple ][e. Only 95 was officially supported on those card since Apple made drivers for 95. Without the drivers you can run into lots of troubles.

I've never seen a Q630 for sale either...or a 640. Btw, my LC630 started out with an LC '040, but then when i put in a DOS Compatible mobo, it got a full '040. Works wonders with MpegDec! Probably here in America with our real money I've seen 640's, I even have an install CD set from one, and I've nearly bought a quadra 630 before... Never seen a Quadra 640 though, that would be a good vHack idea for dana (You can even mention that you found it in Australia ) wow, you've got the equivalent there, of more than an 840av (keep that large amound of memory in there! it's cool ) and a 160 MHz pentium ~ish computer... with 128 mb of RAM, that'll run Windows Server 2003! (with 64, you can run XP home) 32mb will probably run 2k pro, but don't hold me to that... /me dies. Can you imagine an LC/Quaddie/Performa 6x0 running Windows XP???? (Put the 64 MB stick into the PC side, and get more hard drive space for the PC!!!!!) cory> is a Quadra 640 much the same as a 630 but with AV capabilities? It still comes up with GPFs when you run Windows 9x, but when you remove the 586-160 and place the Cyrix 486 in it's place, it runs without any problems - just slowly. DOS itself works without any problems, including games etc. Might run a 586 utility to see if I can dumb down some of it's 'advanced features' the compatibility card might not like. cory again> Only DOS-based OSes work, AFAIK. NT-based systems don't work, as the drivers are not supported. BeOS requires a 'pentium' (will still give it a shot!), and Linux support was never released.
