I was out and about today and then remembered that I forgot to get my macs a christmas present. Then, I saw a USRobotics Sportster modem at the thrift store, while looking for a cable for a keyboard. $3, with the cable and wallbrick. I bought it, took it home, set it up, and am using it to post this. Problem is, NS Communicator 4.08 eats so much RAM. I need something more suitable, but not without a feature reduction (Java, JavaScript, etc.) Help me, and merry (late) christmas

CyberDog may not be the prettiest in town but it sure does the job. Basic Javascript it can do, although Java itself is out of the question.

You could try Netscape Gold 3, it's a nice browser. But I'll stick with Cyberdog.

How do you get Cyberdog to work on a 68K. I tried to install it but it said that I needed a PPC.

We are expecting that you have the ppc version of cyberdog, find the 68k version, mostly i think i have seen it as 68k.

I use NS 4.0.8, though IE is faster.

I found that NS was more stable(4.0.8) & I just don't like IE, in a very personal way. But you see it is faster & alot of pple use it. But either of those two I think is your best bet, but IE version 5.1 I think.

If you use NS then make a ram disk & use it for the cache, that'll speed it up a bit.

What are you browsing? use icab I think if you want text only/basic pages.

I'll second that...CyberDog rocks, even on my LC475!

My Macs only observe holidays according to the names they are given.

San Martín - After the Spanish Galleon built in Portugal in 1588. Historic Reference: http://college.hmco.com/history/readerscomp/ships/html/sh_080400_sanmart in.htm

Proteus Steinmetz - After Charles Proteus Steinmetz, Historic Information http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blsteinmetz.htm

Archimedas Sicilia - Named after Archimedes, the mathematician and inventor from ancient Sicily, Greece. Historic Information http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blarchimedes.htm

Black Swan - Named after Thomas Leach's 40-gun ship in Rafael Sabatini's novel The "Black Swan" -Circa ~1932.

Endymion, a legendary character in Greek mythology.

There are more dates and peroids but I can't find them all.

I kind of figured that I had the PPC only version. I thought that it was odd that Apple's site did not list a 68K version.

Only if you give it to one of your macs as a christmas gift (kind of like how I gave my iMac memory and OS9 for it's fourth birthday) (I think it was the fourth... maybe it was the third though...) (I know that it's fifth has passed by, so it was probably the fourth)

I am an iCab convert. I have used 2.9.6 and 2.9.7 happily. It does have some trouble with a few sites, though. Specifically the ones that have "drop down menus" and such. It tends to put the menu graphics somewhere else on the page. Check out the Harpoon Brewery site for an example of this:

For sites like this, I switch to IE 4 or maybe Netscape 4. IE usually works better, mainly because of all the idiot web designers who create sites that work like crap on other browsers. Do I sound bitter?

I'm going to try CyberDog. I never tried it before, because System 7.6 came with the PPC-only version.

PPC: 9600 (G4/700), 9500 (G3/400) & 8500 (G3/300)
