Hey!Just scored and 840AV on ebay for 31 AUD, or about 15 USD!!! 64MB of RAM, 1 gig disk and caddy loading CD. I've thrown a 12x CD in there and a friend and I cleared out a bunch of old computers and printers from a large bank yesterday so we have a crap load of 32MB SIMMS so I can max it out later today. We even found some 64MB SIMMs but they are single sided and I don't think they will work, oh well... anyway this is my best 68k Mac and can keep my colour class/300 and Cube happy! Clearing the bank out was pretty cool, in the printer department we got an Epson stylus 600 with a mac serial connection, a laserjet 5l which my girlfriends parents are getting and a laserjet 2200DN with built in ethernet and duplexing which is going on to my networks. What was particularly cool was the techtronix phaser(?) 360 a seriously beefy and fast 4 colour dye-sub printer!!!! Fingers crossed we can get it working because it can never quit spit the paper out when it's warming up even though it manages to print the whole page, the paper just stops moving at the last moment.... we also get 10 PC's ranging from P100's to P200's which we're stripping for parts. Not bad considering it was all free, in fact we got paid to take it away! I found 2.20 in a slot loading CD drive!! -------- Apple ][e. Great Haul, what did you do, rob a bank? Erm umm, I guess you did. There is nothing so nice as being paid to be given stuff. Enjoy your new/old 840av and I hope you get that printer working. Sweet score on that 2200. Enable EtherTalk on there and you should be able to print from any of your Macs.--Eric ___________________________ Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. --Albert Einstein |

Networked printers are nice, anybody know of any cheap dongles that would let me network my 4/600 laser?

Maybe if it's got a LPT port. There's cheap LPR print servers out there that would let you network to NT or *NIX. They plug into the LPT port and go to 10BaseT. Try eBay.Edited by - The Lightning Stalker on 23 Dec 2003 15:30:53 |

Huh?The 2200 has build in ethernet so at the moment it's just connected to my cube, I'm going to have another shot at picking up a cheap airport base station then it will go in to the thernet port on that so it can sit in a cupboad out of the way. I just missed one the other day for abour 30 USD, had that common power problem lights are on but nobodies home, I was out bid in the last 20 seconds though by 5 AUD! Oh well... About the 64MB SIMMS, lowend mac had an article about them ages ago, apparently double sided 64MB SIMMs do work in some Macs. What kind of RAM do I need for the onboard video? all 4 slots are empty, they're a little bigger than 30 pin SIMM slots and they are the same as the ones on the SuperMac Spectrum/IV Wish I still had my old Thunder 1360 with it's photoshop daughter card.... -------- Apple ][e. Sounds kinda like the ones in my Q650. It's a funny sized SIMM that's hard to find. |

That's all well and good but what are the specs of the VRAM SIMMs? Beige G3's take VRAM SIMMs which I'm sure are completely different from whatever the quadra uses, if I knew the specs I could probably get them cheap somewhere.-------- Apple ][e. Okay, I just checked on eBay. They're not so hard to find. Just do a title search on VRAM. Most of it is for Macs and the rest is for video cards. I'm 80% sure you'll need a few 68-pin SIMMs for the 840AV. Like shaktiman says, you can get a few 256k ones. I think I saw some 512k ones on there too. |

But for whatever reason, it's only the 256Kb ones you can use. But lol feel free to try the 512Kb ones, if they blow your computer up "oh well", if they work well let me know. Seriously.......... AFAIK it is 32Mb simms max for memory, 256Kb simms max for vram. I do know that the vram from my 840av is interchangeable with my Q650, but it will be worthwhile asking the seller if it will work in your 840av. shaktiman Quadra 840av, prettymuchmaxedout8xcd drive os 8.1 128 meg ram, 500 meg hard drive 3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" |

I maxed out the vram and main memory on my 840av after i got it. 32mb simms were pretty cheap new , use lowendmac.com for their ramseeker to find the best deals (was cheaper new then on ebay).Vram is 256k, think you need 4 for 2mb total. I suggest you add both at the same time since the 840 is a pain to add memory to (have to remove the motherboard)

God job picking up that 840 and those printers. I got my Hewlett Packard ScanJet IIc about seven years ago from one of Toyota's parts distribution centers. They were just going to throw it out. I almost got a Tektronix Color Phazer (400 Series?) the same way, but they ended up deciding to keep it.As far as I know, the 840 uses faster video RAM than other Macs. Similar to regular 32-pin SIMMs. The faster ones will work in any Mac, while the slower ones will cause problems in faster Macs, such as the 840. And don't think that pulling SIMMs from a PowerMac will get you the faster memory - it doesn't, as the First Generation PowerMacs used really slow memory. The first Mac we (my family) owned was a Performa 460. That had 512K VRAM onboard, and a single slot that would accomodate a 256K SIMM for a grand total of 768K of video memory and 16-bit color on the 14" display that it came with. The Performa 475 (Quadra 605) had none onboard, but had two slots that could take either a pair of 256K or 512K SIMMs. The Quadra 900/950 also had a pile of VRAM slots. From what I remember, many of these Macs could use the larger, 512K SIMMs, but could only "see" them as 256K. The 840 has two options for you. Either 1MB of memory (all onboard, with no SIMMs in the slots) or 2MB by filling all four slots with 256K SIMMs. With 2MB, you can use a monitor and a TV at the same time. You can't do that with the 660AV. I think it also allowed you to capture video with both fields instead of just duplicating one of the fields. > http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=112217 > http://www.lowendmac.com/quadra/q840av.shtml John Gilbert, Xanathus Studios 68K: Powerbook Duo 280c, Quadra 840av (2 of 'em), Quadra 950, IIcx, Performa 460, etc. (a lot of "etc.") PPC: 9600 (G4/700), 9500 (G3/400) & 8500 (G3/300) |
