Is anybody watching DVDs successfully (happily with NO reservations) on a G3 or G4 upgraded 9500 or 9600?I've been viciously attacking a couple of Mac II series cases with my r . . . Whatever! . . . anyway . . . I need to know if I should I bother to make enough room for a DVD drive to go along with the CD-RW while I'm stacking slices of beige bits? BTW: a slimline Macintosh IIfx05 with just the lid and the bottom sections looks VERY cool. Lopping off a good portion of the base to make it into a really low profile "blade" case hack or maybe turning the corners of the base into "SPARCstation-ish" lookin' feets using the cutoffs from in between and leaving a few ribs worth of center section would make a very nice hack too!

IIRC, a separate PCI decode card or summat was made for older machines like this. I have not tried it either way, but I am imagining with little hardware acceleration, it could be hard. The hack also sounds really cool too! ~The Penguin **| Want free 68kmla email? JT, there was an old board called DVD4Mac or something, it was merely a rebadged HollyWood Plus card, so if you can locate a Hollywood plus PCi decoder board, the Mac drivers are laying around somewhere. (I'm unsure what version of Hollywood Plus it is, you might get a reponse from the company who makes it ...)I wil ask my friend and make sure it was the Hollywood plus...Was Hollywood + made by Sigma? That board did DVD decoding. Although the Mac drivers might not support all the features the PC drivers did, the board will do VCD, SVCD and other MPEG formats.

I think that most G3 and G4 processors are endowed with the ability to decode DVDs.I'm not quite sure how that goes with an upgraded 9x00 though. Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide Editor of the MLAgazine "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" |

Thanks, and thanks for the Hampster compliment too, T-bird.I'm going to paste those comments about oddball offshoots of the case mod I'm doing in the musings thread, but here's a link to the Illustrator studies I did from an illustration in the service manual pdf. It's the wired$DVD decoder card, I know I have one! They're not bad can play back DVD at almost any resolution put no load on the processor (well almost none) can output 5.1 sound (only mainstream for macs with new G5's) and can output straight to TV or use a loopback cable to display on the desktop. Downsides are you can only change region 5 times, probably not a problem if you live in the US and they are kinda expensive on eBay. However I was pretty happy with mine, it's just sitting in a drawer now until I have the space need for another 9600 It;s also the only way to use a 3dfx graphics card and get DVD playback -------- Apple ][e. I just searched the 'fritter CC forum and "Wired4dvd" was the card RichFiles mentioned using in his 6500/CC.How much do they fetch lately on eBay? What search parameters do you suggest that I try for the Mac & PC versions on eBay and for info on the web? Can you elaborate on the 3dfx issues? I know little or nothing about PCI cards except for a little research I did on running Dual Voodoo 2s on the Mac. Does anybody have info on flashing a PC version of this card or about using it under any specific Mac O.S. levels? Thanks, comrades! jt . Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. From what I can tell the PC version is exactly the same..no special ROM just Mac drivers. But I'm not 100% sure.

just keep searching for wired4dvd last time I saw them on ebay, which isn't often, they were going for 75USD. I got luck and only paid 40 for mine but they guy had a crap ebay rating, and was a crap ebayer, although apart from the slowness of the transaction I was ok.....Anyway, even though this might be identical to the PC version it's going to do you no good unless you can find a flashing utility, unless by some obscure chance it's a hybrid ROM which I doubt.... Richfiles got one on my recomendation, I've actually spoken to you about them before on these here forums! There are no issues when using this card with a 3dfx one. The probem is that Apples DVD player software only works with ATI and NVIDIA cards so there was no way to play DVDs if you had a 3DFx card. Using the wired4DVD card changes that though because it does 100% of the work and comes with it's own DVD playing software so what graphics card you have is irrelevant. So if you have a 3DFx card and want to watch DVD's this is the only way. The only real downer for this card is it is OS 9 only, of course anything that can run OS X well probably doesn't need it. Forgot to mention the wired4DVD card can connect to the main graphics card with a loopback cable, alternatively it can output the DVD straight to a second monitor, TV etc, it cannout output anything other than what is on the DVD though so you can't use i to extend your desktop. XLR8yourmac.com has a good review of this card, you should probably check it out. -------- Apple ][e. My main Mac is a PowerMac 9600/233 that has been upgraded with a 700MHz G4 Sonnet Crescendo card, 384MB RAM, FireWire, USB, multiple video cards, Mac OS 9.2.2, etc.I have been editing video on it, and creating VCDs and SVCDs somewhat happily for a while, back when it was a 400MHz G3 (PowerLogix). Premiere 6 crashes frequently, and without provocation, as well as drops frames while capturing via FireWire. Now I use iMovie to do the capturing. Much better. Anyhow... I bought an MCE FireWire DVD-RW drive from MacMall ($249USD) partially because of the price, but mostly because it came with DVD Authoring software that would run on a G3 processor in OS 9 or X. It ends up that the software is a joke. It is aweful. But that's a rant for another day. At least it didn't cost any extra for it. Apple DVD Player wouldn't work with a FW drive without a patch, even though I have an ATI Rage128 card (Orion). I couldn't get v2.7 working at first. So I tried 2.3, and that worked. Then I tried 2.7 again, and then that worked. (Strange??? - it might have to do with the Joliet Volume Access extension that I have installed, although it works fine now.) To wrap this up... With the 700MHz G4 in my 9600, DVD playback over FW is flawless. I don't know if it works well on lesser CPUs, though. I can even play DVD content from VIDEOTS folders on my Fantom Drives 120GB FW hard drive.
