Has anyone used one of these cards to adapt a ZIF upgrade for use in a PCI Mac? How well do they work and are there any models currently available? I'd like to be able to use an accelerator in a PCI Mac now and then in a Beige G3 when I finally get one to play with.

If anybody has a ZIF Carrier handy, I'd appreciate a measurement of how much the rail mounted on top increases the height of the card. ZIF carriers and PCI upgrade cards appear to be sized to fit slimline clone cases that use a three slot PCI riser and the rail brings the card's height up to match Apple processor cards. I'd like to know how much clearance removing the rail provides.

Is it just me or is xlr8yourmac one of the more difficult sites to navigate?

I believe Capt. Z once put one into his 7500 so he could use the original G3 processor out of his B&W into it. I don't know how well it worked though...

XLR8 ZIF Carrier Card

Without the riser rail, the card is normally 3" tall. With the riser, it is 3 15/16" tall.

Yes it is.

I'd thoroughly reccomend the xlr8 cards, I had 0 problems with mine primarily in a 9600 but also a PTP225 (essentially a 9500) and a 7300. Xlr8yourmac have some good review, you can get them for about 50 USD without a ZIF and they allow fine control over bus speed and CPU multiplier to get maximum performance, I ran the included G3 400 that came with mine at 485 for around 2 years before selling both.

From what I hear they are the way to go. CPU+ZIF card combos are much cheaper than the ones with the CPU soldered in and work just as good. I was going to buy one for my 7600 until I just broke down and got a beige G3.

Thanks for all the great info comrades, it reinforces my thinking about the soundness of this upgrade strategy in terms of cost and flexibility. The target system also just happens to be very similar to the 9600, so that information is particularly helpful.

Thanks, guys!
