A Gameboy Projector!I have my (now working) original GameBoy here, and I'm looking at the original Final Fantasy, and a mario game and such. It is making me think "What if this were really really big, on my bedroom wall?" So I'm thinking that my first foray into making a projector will be with this gameboy. There are a few concerns though, which I will address right here, since somebody here has to know about some of this old hardware. 1) My projector will need an external control pad, I am thinking about using a nintendo controller (original) because of the matching buttons, but am not sure how I would rig it up. 2) Is this LCD transparent? I need a see-thru LCD so that light can go through it when I'm working on making it projec-tastic. 3) How do I get a tool, or use my existing tools to get those crazy screws out? Thanks in Advance for any help and such Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide Editor of the MLAgazine "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" |

All I can say is that to cure your projection needs you need to cough up $1,00.00 US and buy one. Then you'll have the fix.

Epson PowerLite S1 and InFocus X1, SVGA, $1000 each.I believe thta HP/Compaq and Dell/Gateway each have 1grand SVGA projectors as well. I was thinking of building my own, and starting with a gameboy, but I might consider switching that to a PwoerBook Duo or 5x0 or something. I can't get the GameBoy open Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide Editor of the MLAgazine "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" |

I think you can do it, although the results might not be pretty. You will need a gameboy and an old slide projector and some wire and that nintendo controller. First, open up the gameboy and get the screen out and separate that from all of the other hardware like the case and electronics but leave it attached by the cable at the bottom. Second, pull off the reflective backing from the LCD plate. Third, mount the LCD plate and the old slide projector so that the light is being shone through the gameboy screen. I would suggest doing this outside of the slide projector but I imagine it could be placed inside the projector in roughly the same area as a slide would be located. I really think that is could work, the only thing I would be concerned about is the contrast ratio on the LCD and if you placed the LCD inside the projector if it would get too hot. I think the LCD is a piece of clear glass because I have heard of hacks where people have taken their GB's apart and peeled off the reflective piece to replace it with an electroluminescent panel for backlighting. For the controller just take a nintendo controller and a multi-strand cable, maybe an old mac serial cable, and solder a pair of wires to each button contact on the controller and do the same with the other end on the gameboy board. You'll probably need to get a torx screwdriver or a powerdrill to get those screws out. Give it a try cory, it would be awesome if it worked. Actually, I hadn't really thought of doing it with an existing projector. The only problem is getting the lil' gameboy (it's an original gameboy, so it's not that liggle :P) apart because of those crazy nintendo screws... then, as you said, getting the light through everywhere, and also, the controller. I was also thinking of building in a nice stereo speaker(s) to complement that HUGE picture http://cory5412.50free.net/PowerBook100Projector.gif The setup would look a bit like that, but with a different LCD, and a bit smaller. Apparently, there is also ways to make the whole setup smaller, by somewhat curving it (I have the perfect box for a GameBoy Projector, iff'n that's the case!)
